We have discovered that the sulfonation of polystyrene can form a gradient-index medium useful for lightfocusing purposes. We found that the refractive index of sulfonated polystyrene varies with the degree of sulfonation and that the refractive index of the fully sulfonated polystyrene decreased by approximately 0.06 at 0.633 microm from that of pure polystyrene.

Sulfasalazine is a non-specific immunomodulator with haemolytic anaemia as a known side effect that crosses the placenta. We present a preterm neonate with cardiac arrhythmia secondary to hyperkalaemia in the setting of maternal sulfasalazine therapy. A preterm infant was born to a mother taking hydroxychloroquine, sulfasalazine, aspirin and enoxaparin throughout pregnancy.

PEDOT/Polypyrrole Core-Sheath Fibers for Use as Conducting Polymer Artificial Muscles.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Sensor and Actuator Systems, Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM), Linköping University, Linköping SE-581 83, Sweden.

Electropolymerized polypyrrole (PPy) is considered as one of the promising polymers for use in ionic-electroactive or conducting polymer (CP) actuators. Its electromechanical properties surpass those of other prominent CPs such as poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT/PSS) or polyaniline. However, freestanding and linear contracting actuator fibers made solely of electropolymerized PPy are not available yet.

Background: Hyperkalemia, generally defined as serum potassium levels greater than 5.0 mEq/L, poses significant clinical risks, including cardiac toxicity and muscle weakness. Its prevalence and severity increase in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetes mellitus, and heart failure (HF), particularly when compounded by medications like Angiotensin converting inhibitors, Angiotensin receptor blockers, and potassium sparing diuretics.

Bioinspired bicontinuous adhesive hydrogel for wearable strain sensor with high sensitivity and a wide working range.

J Colloid Interface Sci

January 2025

Key Laboratory for Soft Chemistry and Functional Materials of Ministry of Education, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Nanjing 210094 China. Electronic address:

Conductive hydrogel strain sensors demonstrate extensive potential in artificial robotics, human-computer interaction, and health monitoring, owing to their excellent flexibility and biocompatibility. Wearable strain sensors for real-time monitoring of human activities require hydrogels with self-adhesion, desirable sensitivity, and wide working range. However, balancing the high sensitivity and a wide working range remains a challenge.

Highly stable calcium ion selective electrodes (Ca-ISEs) were developed by drop-casting a layer of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT: PSS) as an ion-to-electron transfer layer onto Au electrode. The conductive PEDOT: PSS ink was prepared using a metastable liquid-liquid contact (MLLC) doping method, which induced phase separation, removed excess PSS, and significantly enhanced charge transfer kinetics and conductivity. The resulting Ca-ISEs exhibited excellent electrochemical performance.
