Background: McKittrick-Wheelock syndrome is an uncommon and severe disorder caused by large hypersecretory tumors located in the distal colorectal area. Excessive secretion from adenomas is an unusual clinical manifestation that leads to severe electrolyte and fluid depletion, subsequently resulting in kidney injury. Successful treatment relies on quick and cooperative decision-making for timely intervention.

Background: This study was designed to evaluate the diagnostic value of bile acid levels in drainage fluid for early prediction and exclusion of anastomotic leakage, and assess the performance in allowing a safe discharge.

Methods: This prospective single-center study was conducted in patients diagnosed with rectal cancer who had received minimally invasive anterior resection consecutively from December 2021 to March 2024. Bile acid in drainage fluid, C-reactive protein, and procalcitonin in serum were measured on the third and fifth day after surgery.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Huashi Baidu Granule (HSBDG), a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), is used for treating coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is considered the "COVID-19" for swine. According to the TCM theory, "dampness" is the main pathogenic factor in COVID-19 and PRRS, and "Huashi" means that this formula is good at removing "dampness".
