Piezoelectric sensors are acoustic sensors that enable the selective and label-free detection of biological events in real time. These sensors generate acoustic waves and utilize measurements of the variation of the wave propagation properties as a signal for probing events at the sensor surface. Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) devices, the most widespread acoustic resonators, allow the study of viscoelastic properties of matter, the adsorption of molecules, or the motility of living cells. In a tutorial-like approach, this review addresses the physical principles associated with the QCM, as well as the origin and effects of major interfering phenomena. Special attention is paid to the possibilities offered by QCM that go beyond microweighing, and important recent examples are presented.

It is well known that metals and metal oxides with different crystal facets exhibit varying sensitivity in gas sensors, but this strategy is rarely used in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Herein, we proved for the first time that Cu metal-organic with high energy crystal facets (Cu-MOF-74-300) shows a much higher sensitivity than the low energy crystal facets (Cu-MOF-74-110), with a up to 2 times response more than Cu-MOF-74-110 and ultra-low limit of detection (LOD) of 68 ppb to toluene vapors. In addition, this strategy was further demonstrated on MOF-14 and HKUST-1, which are also Cu-centered and exhibit clear recognition effects on benzene and xylene, respectively.

This study investigates the effect of different linkers and solvents on the immobilization of DNA probes on graphene surfaces, which are crucial for developing high-performance biosensors. Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) measurements were used to characterize in situ and real-time the immobilization of ssDNA and hybridization efficiency on model graphene surfaces. The DNA probes immobilization kinetics and thermodynamics were systematically investigated for all the pairings between three bifunctional linkers─1-pyrenebutyric acid succinimidyl ester (PBSE), Fluorenylmethylsuccinimidyl carbonate (FSC), and Acridine Orange (AO) succinimidyl ester─and three organic solvents (DMF, DMSO, and 10% DMF/ethanol).

There is a growing demand for biobased functional materials that can ensure targeted pesticide delivery and minimize active ingredient loss in the agricultural sector. In this work, we demonstrated the use of esterified lignin nanoparticles (ELNPs) as carriers and controlled-release agents of hydrophobic compounds. Curcumin was selected as a hydrophobic model compound and was incorporated during ELNP fabrication with entrapment efficiencies exceeding 95%.

Unlabelled: This study investigates the interaction of KEIF, the intrinsically disordered N-terminal region of the magnesium transporter MgtA, with lipid bilayers mimicking cell membranes. Combining experimental techniques such as neutron reflectometry (NR), quartz-crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), synchrotron radiation circular dichroism (SRCD), and oriented circular dichroism (OCD), with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we characterized KEIF's adsorption behavior.
Hypothesis: KEIF undergoes conformational changes upon interacting with lipid bilayers, potentially influencing MgtA's function within the plasma membrane.

Herein, novel, superabsorbent, and pH-responsive hydrogels obtained by the photochemical cross-linking of hydrophilic poly(vinylphosphonates) are introduced. First, statistical copolymers of diethyl vinylphosphonate (DEVP) and diallyl vinylphosphonate (DAlVP) are synthesized via rare earth metal-mediated group-transfer polymerization (REM-GTP) yielding similar molecular weights ( = 127-142 kg/mol) and narrow polydispersities ( < 1.12).
