Multi-scale modeling of CO2 dispersion leaked from seafloor off the Japanese coast.

A numerical simulation was conducted to predict the change of pCO(2) in the ocean caused by CO(2) leaked from an underground aquifer, in which CO(2) is purposefully stored. The target space of the present model was the ocean above the seafloor. The behavior of CO(2) bubbles, their dissolution, and the advection-diffusion of dissolved CO(2) were numerically simulated. Here, two cases for the leakage rate were studied: an extreme case, 94,600 t/y, which assumed that a large fault accidentally connects the CO(2) reservoir and the seafloor; and a reasonable case, 3800 t/y, based on the seepage rate of an existing EOR site. In the extreme case, the calculated increase in DeltapCO(2) experienced by floating organisms was less than 300 ppm, while that for immobile organisms directly over the fault surface periodically exceeded 1000 ppm, if momentarily. In the reasonable case, the calculated DeltapCO(2) and pH were within the range of natural fluctuation.

Stereotactic biopsy of posterior fossa lesions, which are often inoperable, enables a safe trajectory and provides tissue samples for accurate diagnosis, which is crucial for correct treatment since the latest World Health Organization Classification of Tumors of the Central Nervous System from 2021 places immense emphasis on molecular diagnostics. Stereotactic biopsy using the Leksell Vantage headframe is, due to its rigid design, extremely accurate, but stiffer, making the procedure more challenging and the learning curve steeper. This retrospective analysis demonstrates the introduction of the new Leksell Vantage headframe in day-to-day practice at the University Medical Center in Maribor, Slovenia, in demanding procedures of posterior fossa biopsies, and also provides a review of the literature available on the topic with emphasis on the technical aspect of posterior fossa biopsy using the Leksell Vantage headframe in adults.

In Slovakia, there are a number of contaminated sites that have occurred due to intensive mining, mineral processing, metallurgical activities, chemical industry, fossil fuel combustion, and industrial agriculture in the past. This paper summarizes the occurrence, chemistry, toxicity, and mineralogy of arsenic species related to soil and water contamination in Slovakia. Four main localities with arsenic exposure were identified.

Sandwiched Strut Allografts with Stem Retention to Treat Fragile Periprosthetic Femoral Fractures: A Case Report.

Managing periprosthetic femoral fractures is challenging, particularly in osteoporotic patients with fragile bones. Revision with a long stem is commonly considered but may fail to provide adequate fixation and stability in fragile bones. A novel approach using sandwiched strut allografts and controlled bone crushing with robust cable fixation can offer mechanical support and provide secondary stability to the loosened femoral stem and can be considered a treatment option for low-demand patients.
