Polyelectrolyte multilayer microspheres were fabricated by layer-by-layer self-assembly of a dextran sulphate and a protamine on melamine formaldehyde cores, followed by the partial decomposition of the core. Effects of pH on the encapsulation of proteins and enzymes with different physico-chemical properties (insulin, aprotinin, peroxidase, glucose oxidase (GOD), catalase (Cat)) in the prepared microspheres were then studied. This method of protein encapsulation demonstrated a high loading capacity and efficiency. The protein incorporation and release was regulated by the pH of the solution. Encapsulated enzymes retained a high specific activity depending on the amount of protein incorporated. Bienzyme system GOD/Cat immobilized in the microspheres was suitable for the glucose content assay.

Oligoguluronate lithium (OGLi) was prepared for the purpose of enhancing the anti-ulcerative colitis (UC) activities of OG, in which lithium (Li) is coupled with the C6-carboxyl of G residue. The therapeutic effects of OGLi on dextran sulfate (DSS)-induced UC mice were investigated, and oligoguluronate sodium (OGNa) and lithium carbonate (LC) were used as contrasts. The effects of OGLi, OGNa and LC on the treatment of UC mice were studied by monitoring body weight change and evaluating colon length, the disease activity index (DAI), histopathological examination and gut microbiota regulation.

To explore potential anti-inflammatory lead compounds, ten new physalin steroids, including three neophysalins (1, 4, and 9) and seven physalins (2, 3, 5-8, and 10), along with eleven known analogs, were isolated from an ethanol extract of the calyx of Physalis alkekengi. The new structures were rigorously determined through comprehensive HRESIMS, 1D/2D-NMR, and X-ray diffraction analysis. Among these compounds, 1 was identified as a new 1,10-seco-neophysalin, and 2 was identified as a new 11,15-cyclo-9,10-seco-physalin characterized by an aromatic A-ring.

The bacteria living in the human gut are essential for host health. Though the composition and metabolism of these bacteria are well described in both healthy hosts and those with intestinal disease, less is known about the metabolic activity of the gut bacteria prior to, and during, disease development-especially regarding gut bacterial replication. Here, we use a recently developed single-cell technique alongside existing metagenomics-based tools to identify, track, and quantify replicating gut bacteria both and in the dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) mouse model of colitis.
