[Hypokalemic paralysis revealing Sjögren's syndrome associated with auto-immune thyroiditis].

Service de médecine interne, hôpital militaire Moulay Ismaïl, Meknès, Maroc.

Published: February 2010

We report a case of 36-year-old woman, admitted for hypotonic tetraparesis. Laboratory tests revealed severe hypokalaemia, acidosis, hyperchloremia and alkaline urinary pH allowing the diagnosis of distal tubular acidosis. Additional investigations led to the diagnosis of primary Sjögren's syndrome associated with Hashimoto's thyroïditis. The evolution was favorable under potassium citrate alkalinisation, the corticosteroid therapy and hormonal substitution. Based on this observation, the pathogenesis of distal tubular acidosis during auto-immune diseases (Sjögren's syndrome, monoclonal hypergammaglobulinemia, hypothyroidism) was discussed as well as its consequences and management.

Background: Emerging infectious disease disasters receive extensive media coverage and public attention. Nurse burnout and attrition peak during health crises such as pandemics. However, there is limited research on nursing issues related to repeated emerging infectious disease crises over time.

Methyl CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2) is a chromatin-associated protein that remains enigmatic despite more than 30 years of research, primarily due to the ever-growing list of its molecular functions, and, consequently, its related pathologies. Loss of function MECP2 mutations cause the neurodevelopmental disorder Rett syndrome (RTT); in addition, dysregulation of MeCP2 expression and/or function are involved in numerous other pathologies, but the mechanisms of MeCP2 regulation are unclear. Advancing technologies and burgeoning mechanistic theories assist our understanding of the complexity of MeCP2 but may inadvertently cloud it if not rigorously tested.

Hypermagnesemia- and Hyperphosphatemia-Associated Cardiac Arrest after Injection of a Novel Magnesium-Based Bone Cement in Spinal Surgery.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg Glob Res Rev

January 2025

From the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Singapore General Hospital, Singapore (Dr. Loh, Dr. Ling, Dr. Jiang, and Lim) and the Department of Surgical Intensive Care, Division of Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Singapore General Hospital, Singapore (Dr. Goh).

We report a case of pulseless electrical activity (PEA) associated with profound hypermagnesemia immediately after cementation of a novel magnesium-based cement in spine surgery. During T8 to T12 posterior instrumentation and decompression laminectomy for vertebral metastasis secondary to lung cancer, a 61-year-old Chinese woman developed sudden hypotension and went into PEA immediately after injection of a novel magnesium-based cement. Intraoperative fluoroscopic imaging did not show any notable cement extravasation.

Blood-based biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology have been intensively investigated as markers for AD-related neurodegeneration. Comorbid AD pathology is common in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). Accordingly, we hypothesized that plasma biomarkers associated with AD pathology might be useful to predict DLB in a cohort of idiopathic/isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD), an incipient synucleinopathy.

Study Question: Are empirically derived adolescent overweight/obesity phenotypes differentially associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in young adulthood?

Summary Answer: Self-reported PCOS diagnosis risk in young adulthood varied by empirically derived adolescent overweight/obesity phenotypes, with the highest risk observed among those in the 'mothers with obesity' and 'early puberty' phenotypes.

What Is Known Already: Overweight and obesity during puberty are postulated to promote the development of PCOS. Much of the prior literature in this area is cross-sectional and defines weight status based solely on BMI, yet emerging research suggests that not all people with overweight/obesity have the same risk for chronic health conditions, including PCOS.
