Insertion sequence common region (ISCR) elements are insertion sequences that have similarities to the IS91 family in both structure and function. ISCR elements differ from the insertion sequences by that they lack terminal inverted repeats (IRs), do not generate directly repeated sequence on insertion and are thought to be transposed by a mechanism termed rolling-circle (RC) transposition. ISCR elements, as a novel gene-capturing system, can mobilize any piece of adjacent DNA sequences. This powerful gene mobilization mechanism provides antibiotic resistance genes with a highly mobile genetic vehicle to transfer between different species of bacteria. Nineteen members of the ISCR family have been discovered until now in many Gram-negative pathogens. The majority of these elements are found to be closely associated with antimicrobial resistance genes that are not necessary components of the host genome, suggesting that ISCR elements may be responsible for the rapid transmission of bacterial multi-drug resistance. This review described some important aspects of ISCR elements, including their structure characteristics, classification, mobilization mechanism, origins and evolutions.

In this study, we investigate structural disorder and its implications in metal cluster (MC)-based compounds, specifically focusing on Cs[{MoX}X] (X = Cl and Br). Utilizing synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and luminescence measurements, we examined the incorporation of water molecules into these compounds and their effects on the crystal structure and optical properties. Our findings reveal that the presence of water molecules induces the lattice disorder, particularly the displacement of Cs atoms.

Assessing the fate of contaminants in the environment requires a deep understanding of intrinsic adsorption mechanisms on natural minerals such as Fe-oxyhydroxides. In this study, we proposed an innovative approach to probe site heterogeneities on the goethite surface by comparing the adsorption behavior of rare earth elements (REEs, including Sc, Y, and all lanthanides; Ln) except Pm, as well as Th and U. A surface loading-dependent adsorption of Ln and Y was observed, with a shift from (i) preferential middle to heavy REE adsorption and (ii) limited to substantial fractionation between Y and Ho as the loading increased.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous environmental contaminants that often co-occur with heavy metals. Despite their prevalence, the mobility of PFAS in complex, multicomponent systems, particularly at the molecular scale, remains poorly understood. The vast diversity of PFAS and their low concentrations alongside anthropogenic and natural substances underscore the need for integrating mechanistic insights into the sorption models.

Heavy metal contamination has harmful consequences for the ecosystem. They are naturally non-biodegradable, and can cause severe ecotoxicity and numerous pathologies. Several bioadsorbents have been used for metal pollution control, and chitosan is one of the biomaterials that has proven to be an efficient adsorbent.

ConspectusRecently, helicene derivatives have emerged as an important class of molecules with potential applications spanning over asymmetric catalysis, biological activity, magnetism, spin filtering, solar cells, and polymer science. To harness their full potential, especially as emissive components in circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs), generating structural chemical diversity and understanding the resulting photophysical and chiroptical properties are crucial. In this Account, we shed light on chemical engineering combining helicene and -heterocyclic carbene (NHC) chemistries to create transition-metal complexes with unique architectures and describe their photophysical and chiroptical attributes.
