Background: Evoked potentials allow one to assess functional integrity of sensory pathways projecting to primary sensory cortices and event-related potentials assess higher order cortical functions associated with stimulus detection and decision-making. Evoked and event-related potentials have been used to predict emergence from coma. This study aimed to determine whether they can help prediction of consciousness recovery in post-traumatic vegetative state (VS).

Methods: Thirty-four patients in post-traumatic VS were assessed clinically and neurophysiologically at 2-3 months after injury and followed up to 1 year. Patients were assessed with the Disability Rating Scale (DRS) and with electroencephalogram (EEG), brainstem auditory (BAEP) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) and P300. Demographic, clinical and neurophysiological measures were analysed by descriptive and logistic regression techniques.

Results: At 1 year from injury, 26 patients (76%) had recovered consciousness and eight patients (24%) had not. In univariate analyses, a detectable P300, a reactive EEG and lower DRS scores were found at entry assessment more frequently (p < 0.05) in patients who later recovered consciousness than in those who did not. Logistic regression analysis revealed that P300 was the only factor contributing to prediction of conscious recovery with an area under the ROC curve of 0.94 (95% CI, 0.80-0.99).

Conclusions: P300 is a strong predictor of conscious recovery in VS.

The shift from vegetative to reproductive growth is an important developmental transition that affects flowering and maturation, architecture, and ecological adaptability in plants. The florigen-antiflorigen system universally controls flowering and plant architecture, and changes to the ratio of these components alter this transition and disrupt growth. The genes FT (FLOWERING LOCUS T), encoding the florigen protein FT, and CETS [CENTRORADIALIS (CEN)/TERMINAL FLOWER1 (TFL1)/SELF-PRUNING (SP)], encoding antiflorigen proteins, have opposing roles.

Outcomes of Acute Subdural Hematoma in Adults with a GCS Score of 3 : An Analysis from Five Regional Trauma Centers.

J Korean Neurosurg Soc

December 2024

Korea Neuro-Trauma Data Bank Committee, Korean Neurotraumatology Society, Korea.

Objective: Acute Subdural Hematoma (A-SDH) in patients with a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of 3 presents significant challenges in clinical decision-making owing to high mortality rates and the likelihood of severe disability. Here, we analyzed data to assess the number of surgical treatments and overall treatment outcomes for patients with A-SDH admitted in a comatose state and discussed the value of such aggressive surgical interventions based on these findings.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted using data from five regional trauma centers in Korea registered with the Korean Neurotrauma Data Bank System.

December 2024

Department of Neurology and Department of Neuroscience, The First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University, School of Medicine, Xiamen University, Xiamen, China.

Rationale: Osmotic demyelination syndrome (ODS) is a noninflammatory demyelinating disorder involving the pontis and other regions of the central nervous system. This article tries to enhance the understanding of ODS. Combined with clinical features, we use laboratory/imaging examination and literature review.

Rationale: Cardiac arrest (CA) is an acute emergency with high mortality and is closely associated with the risk of brain damage or systemic ischemia-reperfusion injury, post-traumatic stress symptoms.

Patient Concerns: Targeted temperature management in the intensive care unit can improve the neurological outcomes of patients who are comatose after resuscitation from CA. However, there is often a lack of specific evaluation methods for optimal target temperature settings.

The 24-kDa subunit of mitochondrial complex I regulates growth, microsclerotia development, stress tolerance, and virulence in Verticillium dahliae.

Background: The complete mitochondrial respiratory chain is a precondition for maintaining cellular energy supply, development, and metabolic balance. Due to the evolutionary differentiation of complexes and the semi-autonomy of mitochondria, respiratory chain subunits have become critical targets for crop improvement and fungal control. In fungi, mitochondrial complex I mediates growth and metabolism.
