Aberration correctors using hexapole fields have proven useful to correct for the spherical aberration in electron microscopy. We investigate the limits of the present design for the hexapole corrector with respect to minimum probe size for the scanning transmission electron microscope and discuss several ways in which the design could be improved by rather small and incremental design changes for the next generation of advanced probe-forming systems equipped with a gun monochromator.

Soluble starch/zinc oxide nanocomposites could be promising candidates for eco-friendly antimicrobial, food packaging, and a wide range of other utilization. In order to find a new way for the preparation of this kind of nanocomposites, an efficient and energy-saving reaction for the synthesis of soluble starch/zinc oxide nanocomposites has been investigated. The reaction was implemented in a solid state at room temperature without post-reaction calcination.

Advances in analytical scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and in microelectronic mechanical systems (MEMS) based microheaters have enabled in-situ materials' characterization at the nanometer scale at elevated temperature. In addition to resolving the structural information at elevated temperatures, detailed knowledge of the local temperature distribution inside the sample is essential to reveal thermally induced phenomena and processes. Here, we investigate the accuracy of plasmon energy expansion thermometry (PEET) as a method to map the local temperature in a tungsten (W) lamella in a range between room temperature and 700 °C.

CK-666, an inhibitor of the actin-related protein complex 2/3 (Arp2/3), can suppress lamellipodia formation and cell migration. However, research on its application in tumor therapy is still limited. Using RNA-seq, we clustered and analyzed the functions of differentially expressed mRNAs in CK-666-treated tumor cells.

Determining the handedness of helical nanocoils using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has traditionally been challenging due to the deep depth of field and transmission nature of TEM, complementary techniques are considered necessary and have been practiced such as low angle rotary shadowing, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), or atomic force microscopy (AFM). These methods require customized sample preparation, making direct comparison difficult. Inspired by the need to identify the helical winding direction from TEM images alone, we developed a specialized tomography grid to capture stereo-pair images, enabling stereopsis.
