There are several methodological difficulties to address when evaluating acute psychiatric services. This study explored potential methods in evaluating the effectiveness of women's crisis houses compared with psychiatric wards in a pilot patient preference randomized controlled trial. Women requiring voluntary admission to a psychiatric hospital or women's crisis house were asked to enter this pilot and different options for recruitment were explored, including different recruitment sites in the pathway to admission and methods for including women without capacity. Forty-one percent (n = 42) of women entering the study agreed to be randomized and 59% (n = 61) entered patient preference arms. Only 7% of women were recruited before admission and 1 woman without capacity entered the study, despite procedures to facilitate this. Recruitment of patients with acute psychiatric crises is therefore challenging; researchers evaluating acute services should establish a consensus on how ethically and practically to recruit patients in this setting.

Background: Pregnant women and their unborn children are often overlooked in the opioid crisis, despite increased rates of both maternal complications and neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome. Although medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are considered the gold standard for pregnant women, many either do not have access to or are not offered MOUD as an option.
Objectives: To describe the characteristics of MOUD care models and assess the effectiveness of MOUD Care Models on initiation, adherence, and engagement in treatment for pregnant women with OUD.

This study investigates the impact of social capital (SC) on community resilience in crisis management, focusing on the Shiraz flood in Iran. While countries with centralized governance have indicated a lower level of SC among residents, our research shows a heightened level during the response phase of the crisis. Through 12 in-depth interviews with social activists and public administrators, we examined how SC developed among different stakeholders and translated into community resilience.

Bacterial persisters are dormant phenotypic variants that are tolerant to antibiotics, contributing to treatment failure and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. Although the formation of persisters has been extensively studied in regards to bacterial infections and treatment, such as antibiotic exposure or intracellular survival within macrophages, the role of environmental stressors in persister formation remains largely unexplored. In this study, we investigate the role of environmental heavy metals, specifically arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg), in promoting persister cell formation in Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

The aim of this study is to describe the collaborative development and pilot implementation of a peer-support program for survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). The program paired six IPV survivors who were actively in crisis with four survivors who identified as equipped to support other survivors. The program was piloted for 6 months and pre- and post-intervention in-depth interviews were conducted with mentors and mentees.

The balls are rolling for climate change, with increasing vulnerability to women and children related to climate extreme events. Recent evidence has shown that acute exposure to heat wave during pregnancy can be associated with adverse health outcomes in childhood, with the risk being significantly higher among socially disadvantaged population, despite their lack of contribution to global carbon dioxide emissions and the rising global ambient temperature. This unequal impact requires utmost attention to develop tools, establish interdisciplinary teams, and to implement evidence-based interventions for the betterment of women and children in climate-vulnerable populations.
