Published: November 2009

This study examined the muscle activation of the razor curl functional hamstring exercise (the razor curl has the total body extended and then requires the hips and knees to flex to 90 degrees simultaneously with full contraction of the hamstrings to further the knee flexion) to the traditional prone hamstring curl. Eight healthy, female intercollegiate athletes participated (mean age 20.8 +/- 3.9 y; mean height, 177.8 +/- 10.9 cm; mean weight, 67.3 +/- 9.9 kg). Electromyographic (EMG) data were collected on the following muscles: medial hamstring (semimembranosus and semitendinosus), biceps femoris, gluteus medius, and gluteus maximus while participants performed the 2 exercises: razor curl and the traditional prone curl. Results revealed no significant differences between muscle activations during the 2 exercises (p

Purpose: Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) and razor hamstring curl (RHC) are usually performed to train hamstring eccentric contraction strength. However, it is unclear whether there are differences in the intensity of the two methods and the amount of loading on each muscle. Therefore, this study was conducted using peak eccentric force and each muscle surface electromyogram (s-EMG) to provide useful information to decide whether NHE or RHC should be prescribed for training and rehabilitation.

Objectives: To investigate knee flexor strength and biceps femoris long head (BFlh) architectural adaptations following two different Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) interventions and one razor hamstring curl (RHC) intervention.

Methods: Thirty recreationally active males performed a total of 128 reps of NHE (n = 10), NHE (n = 10), or RHC training (n = 10) across 6 weeks. Following the intervention, participants avoided any eccentric training for 4 weeks (detraining period).

Nanomechanical properties of human skin and introduction of a novel hair indenter.

L'Oréal Research and Innovation, Aulnay-Sous-Bois, France. Electronic address:

The mechanical resistance of the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of skin, to deformation has been evaluated at different length scales using Atomic Force Microscopy. Nanomechanical surface mapping was first conducted using a sharp silicon tip and revealed that Young׳s modulus of the stratum corneum varied over the surface with a mean value of about 0.4GPa.

Purpose/background: The RAZOR curl has been introduced as a hamstring exercise. However, modifications to the exercise have been developed which are proposed to utilize some of the muscles of the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex. Thus, it was the purpose of this study to quantitatively examine the modified RAZOR curl using surface electromyography (sEMG), as an exercise that may recruit the trunk muscles of the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex.
