The preliminary results of a trial to examine and compare the safety, tolerability and efficacy of a single dose of teicoplanin with three doses of cephradine combined with metronidazole are presented in a series of 113 patients undergoing elective vascular surgery. There were no obvious differences in the infection rates and sepsis indicators in either group. Neither drug regimen produced any evidence of renal or hepatic damage, though the levels of three hepatocellular enzymes, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and gamma-glutamyl-transferase (GGT), were seen to be transiently elevated, peaking 7 days post-operatively. The trial continues.

Article Synopsis
  • Vancomycin is a key antibiotic for treating MRSA infections, but its overuse has led to increased bacterial resistance, prompting this study to find better alternatives.
  • The research analyzed data from 38 trials involving 6,281 patients, measuring clinical success rates and adverse reactions of various antibiotics, including linezolid and combinations of other drugs with vancomycin.
  • Results indicated that linezolid and certain drug combinations outperformed vancomycin in treating MRSA infections, showing higher success rates and lower resistance, while also highlighting the risks of more side effects with some treatments.

Background: Oritavancin and dalbavancin are long-acting lipoglycopeptide antibiotics approved for the treatment of skin and skin structure infections. Recently, they have been used for outpatient antimicrobial therapy for complicated infections. No head-to-head studies exist for this purpose.

Enantioseparation of amino acids is considered as a challenging task due to the extreme structural similarity of their enantiomers. Herein, teicoplanin was modified with different chemical equivalents of azide groups and attached to silica particles by employing Click Chemistry for resolution of chiral amino acids for the first time. Interestingly, teicoplanin modified with 5-fold the chemical equivalent of azide groups (TK-2 CSP) exhibited superior amino acid separation ability compared to two other columns: one modified with only 1-fold the chemical equivalent of azide groups (TK-1 CSP), and the other modified with excess azide groups (TK-3 CSP).

Department of Experimental and Clinical Medicine, University of Florence, Florence, Italy; Microbiology and Virology Unit, Florence Careggi University Hospital, Florence, Italy. Electronic address:

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate two commercial broth microdilution (BMD) systems, E1-185-100 (Merlin) and FDANDPF (ThermoFisher), for dalbavancin susceptibility testing in comparison with reference BMD assay.

Methods: Study collection was composed of 200 non-replicate multidrug-resistant Gram-positive cocci of clinical origin, including 180 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, 10 vancomycin-resistant enterococci, seven linezolid-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis, and three methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci. Article Synopsis
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of daptomycin compared to standard glycopeptides for complicated Gram-positive infections, focusing on all-cause mortality and clinical outcomes.
  • The analysis included eight randomized controlled trials with a total of 1,095 patients, mainly with complex skin infections, and found no difference in all-cause mortality or clinical cure rates between daptomycin and control groups.
  • Daptomycin showed a higher microbiological cure rate and a significantly lower risk of severe adverse events compared to glycopeptides, although more high-quality trials are needed to confirm these findings, particularly for conditions like bacteraemia and endocarditis.
