[Vaccinations in psychiatry].

Tijdschr Psychiatr

GGZ BuitenAmstel, Amsterdam.

Published: November 2009

Background: Vaccination is a well-known strategy for preventing and treating infections. The purpose of vaccinations is to render antigens harmless by the production of antibodies. In psychiatry there are also situations where antigens that have been introduced from outside or that have developed during an illness constitute a threat to the patient's health.

Aim: To explore the possible applications of vaccination in psychiatry.

Method: In this article we discuss the applications of vaccination in psychiatry on the basis of two examples.

Results: In addiction research, trials are being conducted with antibodies against substances such as cocaine and nicotine in order to prevent such addictive substances from crossing the blood-brain barrier and thereby initiating their rewarding effect. The first clinical results are very promising, but vaccines have not yet been applied clinically. With regard to Alzheimer's disease it has been shown by means of animal models that specific antibodies can prevent AlphaBeta aggregation and dissolve existing aggregates. On the basis of these findings various large-scale clinical trials have begun in order to study immunotherapy for Alzheimer's disease. The first clinical results showed little neurocognitive effects. A wellknown study had to be terminated because of side-effects of the therapy, in the form of neuro-encephalitis.

Conclusion: Our tentative conclusion is that the clinical application of immunotherapy in psychiatry still has its limitations, but is indeed promising.

Agrobacterium-mediated gene transformation method is a vital molecular biology technique employed to develop transgenic plants. Plants are genetically engineered to develop disease-free varieties, knock out unsettling traits for crop improvement, or incorporate an antigenic protein to make the plant a green factory for edible vaccines. The method's robustness was validated through successful transformations, demonstrating its effectiveness as a standard approach for researchers working in plant biotechnology.

Unlabelled: The immune system plays a central role in controlling acute hepatitis B infection and in patients resolving chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Given that 221 million (75%) of CHB patients reside in low- and middle-income countries, the development of a vaccine with therapeutic properties represents a rational and cost-effective approach more than a romantic endeavor. This review systematically analyzes the key variables related to the safety, efficacy, and effectiveness of CHB treatments.

Chitosan, a biodegradable and biocompatible natural polymer composed of β-(1-4)-linked -acetyl glucosamine (GlcNAc) and d-glucosamine (GlcN) and derived from crustacean shells, has been widely studied for various biomedical applications, including drug delivery, cartilage repair, wound healing, and tissue engineering, because of its unique physicochemical properties. One of the most promising areas of research is the investigation of the immunomodulatory properties of chitosan, since the biopolymer has been shown to modulate the maturation, activation, cytokine production, and polarization of dendritic cells and macrophages, two key immune cells involved in the initiation and regulation of innate and adaptive immune responses, leading to enhanced immune responses. Several signaling pathways, including the cGAS-STING, STAT-1, and NLRP3 inflammasomes, are involved in chitosan-induced immunomodulation.

The delivery of molecules, such as DNA, RNA, peptides, and certain hydrophilic drugs, across the epidermal barrier poses a significant obstacle. Microneedle technology has emerged as a prominent area of focus in biomedical research because of its ability to deliver a wide range of biomolecules, vaccines, medicines, and other substances through the skin. Microneedles (MNs) form microchannels by disrupting the skin's structure, which compromises its barrier function, and facilitating the easy penetration of drugs into the skin.

A review of emerging techniques for pyrethroid residue detection in agricultural commodities.

January 2025

Laboratory of Vaccine and Biomolecules, Institute of Bioscience, Universiti Putra Malaysia, 43400, UPM Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia.

Pyrethroid pesticides are essential for modern agriculture, helping to control pests and protect crops. However, due to growing concerns about their potential impact on human health and the environment, reliable detection methods are essential to ensure food safety. In this literature review, we explore the techniques used over the past decade to detect pyrethroid residues in agricultural products.
