The blends of induced volatiles released by higher plants in response to herbivory regularly contain terpenoids. The precursors of volatile terpenoids can be synthesized via two pathways, the mevalonate (MVA) and the methyl erythritol 4-phosphate (MEP) pathways localized in the cytosol and in plastids, respectively. Terpenes are important players in interactions between plants and herbivorous insects, by acting in both direct and indirect defenses. We recently characterized a gene encoding an (E)-beta-ocimene synthase (MtEBOS) in the legume Medicago truncatula Gaertn. Compared to undamaged plants, caterpillar-damaged M. truncatula emitted (E)-beta-ocimene at an elevated level and this increase is associated with high levels of expression of MtEBOS mRNA. Exogenous treatment with jasmonic acid also increases transcript accumulation of MtEBOS. These results indicate that transcript accumulation is used as a tightly regulated mechanism to control (E)-beta-ocimene emission. The data, along with additional findings in other species, illustrate that like most plant families legumes regulate the final steps of volatile terpene biosynthesis at the level of transcript induction.

The citrus scent arises from the volatile monoterpene limonene, whose cyclic nature can be viewed as a miniaturized form of the poly-cyclic sterol triterpenoids. In particular, as these rings are all formed from poly-isoprenyl precursors via carbocation cascades. However, the relevant reactions are initiated by distinct mechanisms, either lysis/ionization of an allylic diphosphate ester bond, as in limonene synthases, or protonation of a terminal olefin or epoxide, as in lanosterol synthases.

Volatile organic compounds, colloquially referred to as "terpenes", have been proposed to impact the therapeutic qualities that are traditionally ascribed to cannabis. However, the contribution of these terpenes in anxiety, at relevant levels and exposure methods common with cannabis use, is lacking empirical assessment. The present study is centred on the analysis of the chemical compositions of essential oils (EOs) and volatile fractions extracted from the aerial parts of L. (APDSL) utilising traditional hydrodistillation (HD), solid phase microextraction (SPME), and a novel method known as innovative cigarette ignition (Incigig), all in combination with GC/MS. The results of this investigation reveal notable differences in both the types and relative percentages of the primary constituents; however, all identified profiles exhibit a significant presence of non-terpene hydrocarbons.
