Since the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in oral carcinogenesis is still unclear, the purpose of this study was to verify the association between the expression of p27, mdm2 and cathepsin B and by HPV-related oral lesions. Fifty-five oral biopsies were studied and HPV detection and typing (6/11, 16, 18, 31 and 33) were performed using polymerase chain reaction techniques. The distribution p27, mdm2 and cathepsin B was determined by immunohistochemistry. Twenty-one (38%) out of the 55 oral lesions tested positive for HPV, of which 6 (33%) were HPV 6/11, 1 (5%) was HPV 16, 14 (72%) were HPV 18 and none was HPV 33/31. Among the 55 biopsies, immunopositivity for p27, mdm2 and cathepsin B was observed in 17 (30.9%), 37 (67.2%) and 37 (67.2%), respectively. Among 21 HPV-positive oral lesions, immunopositivity of mdm2, p27 and cathepsin B was found, respectively, in 6 (33%) out of 18 benign lesions (BL), 4 (22%) out of 18 potential malignant epithelial lesions (PMEL) and 11 (57.9%) out of 19 malignant lesions (ML). High-risk HPV types may be associated with oral carcinoma, by cell-cycle control dysregulation, contributing to oral carcinogenesis and the overexpression of mdm2, p27 and cathepsin B.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common primary liver cancers worldwide and is often associated with poor prognosis due to drug resistance. Combination therapies demonstrate superior efficacy at lower drug dosages on cancer cells compared to single treatments, resulting in less drug resistance in the cells. This study investigates the synergistic anti-tumoral effects of calcitriol, the biologically active form of vitamin D, and sodium pentaborate pentahydrate (NaB) on HepG2 cells.

Purpose: We evaluated the immunoexpression of potential markers involved in the HER2 pathway in invasive breast carcinoma with HER2 amplification treated with trastuzumab.

Methods: Samples of ninety patients diagnosed and treated at two public Brazilian hospitals with overexpressed invasive carcinoma between 2009 and 2018 were included. Several markers (Bcl-2, CDK4, cyclin D1, EGFR, IGF1, IGF-1R, MDM2, MUC4, p16, p21, p27, p53, PTEN, RA, TNFα, and VEGF) were immune analyzed in the tumor by immunohistochemistry and then correlated with clinicopathological variables.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of hepatic malignancies with high mortality and poor prognosis. Baicalein, one of the major and bioactive flavonoids isolated from Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, which is reported to have anti-proliferation effect in varying cancers, including HCC, whose underlying molecular mechanism is still largely unknown. In this study, we found that baicalein significantly inhibited proliferation and colony formation, blocked cell cycle, and promoted apoptosis in HCC cells MHCC-97H and SMMC-7721 in vitro and reduced tumor volume and weight in vivo.

TP53 protein is lost or mutated in about half of all types of human cancers and small molecules to regulate mutant p53 repair, or interrupt ubiquitination degradation of p53 induced by E3-ubiquitin ligase Mdm2 have a potential application in clinical application. To inhibit the deubiquitinase activity of 19S proteasome and restore the p53 protein level, in this study, we utilized p53 knockout mice to test the anti-cancer effect of a specific USP14 and UCH37 inhibitor b-AP15. Our results show that UCHL5, USP14 and COPS5 are upregulated in p53-related tumors, and higher expression of these genes results in a shorter overall survival in patients with p53 deficiency.

Since treatment options for adult T cell leukemia (ATL) associated with human T cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) fail to obtain long-term response, novel therapies targeting ATL-dysregulated pathways are necessary. Dysregulated nuclear import and export machinery is common in malignancies. This study aimed to investigate the potential of exportin-1 (XPO1), which mediates nuclear export of cargos, as a target in ATL.
