Published: August 2009

Although several techniques can be used for microtia repair, some standard procedures have been developed over the past few decades. In specialized centers, these techniques are performed most frequently. They include two to four operative steps using autogenous rib cartilage for the framework and local skin for its tegument. We have been using this technique presented here in more than 800 cases over the past two decades with good and mostly stable results.

Introduction: Repairing damaged cartilage poses significant challenges, particularly in cases of congenital cartilage defects such as microtia or congenital tracheal stenosis, or as a consequence of traumatic injury, as the regenerative potential of cartilage is inherently limited. Stem cell therapy and tissue engineering offer promising approaches to overcome these limitations in cartilage healing. However, the challenge lies in the size of cartilage-containing organs, which necessitates a large quantity of cells to fill the damaged areas.

Triangular flaps combined with full-thickness skin graft for repairing concha-type microtia.

J Plast Reconstr Aesthet Surg

January 2025

Department of Auricular Reconstruction, Plastic Surgery Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, China.

Background: Microtia is a common congenital craniofacial malformation, with concha-type microtia presenting unique challenges due to the relatively large residual auricle tissue and flexible surgical methods. The authors employed triangular flaps combined with full-thickness skin graft technique for treating concha-type microtia, achieving marked treatment effects.

Method: Thirty-five patients with unilateral concha-type microtia were enrolled in this study from January 2023 to June 2024.
