We describe two cases of a retrograde approach to treat a chronic total occlusion (CTO) of the right coronary artery in which we were initially unable to achieve wire crossing. A novel technique of pushing both antegrade and retrograde balloons into the CTO lesion so that the balloons overlapped each other during inflation created a new confluent subintimal space allowing easy, reliable and rapid passing of the retrograde wire into the antegrade true lumen. This novel "confluent balloon" method is recommended to other operators who may struggle with wire crossing during a retrograde approach to CTOs.

Fracture toughness is an important index related to the service safety of marine risers, and weld is an essential component of the steel catenary risers. In this paper, microscopic structure characterization methods such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD), as well as mechanical experiments like crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) and nanoindentation, were employed to conduct a detailed study on the influence of the microstructure characteristics of multi-wire submerged arc welded seams of steel catenary riser pipes on CTOD fracture toughness. The influence mechanisms of each microstructure characteristic on fracture toughness were clarified.

During the production of medical thin-walled tubes, a thin coating layer is required. This requirement reduces the cross-sectional clearance area of the straight section flow channel formed by the mandrel and the die, leading to excessive pressure of the polymer melt at the shaping section, elevated die pressure, and backflow of the material melt, all of which directly impact the quality of the coating layer. To address these issues, this study conducted a non-isothermal numerical simulation of coating models both with and without a shaping section.

The adoption of pultruded glass fibre-reinforced polymer (pGFRP) composites as a substitute for traditional wooden cross-arms in high transmission towers represents a relatively novel approach. Selecting an appropriate microcatheter tip shape for paraclinoid aneurysms is difficult. Therefore, we devised an original simple and uniform three-dimensional (3D) spiral-shaping method of microcatheter and validated the characteristics and usefulness of this method for coil embolization of paraclinoid aneurysms using patient-specific silicone models. These silicone models were produced based on clinical data from four patients with four paraclinoid aneurysms that underwent endovascular treatment using the 3D spiral-shaping method.

A 4-year-old Siberian Husky was referred for bilateral hock trauma after being involved in a road traffic accident. The dog sustained a grade 3 shearing injury to the medial right hock with tibiotarsal subluxation, which was managed with a transarticular frame. The left hock sustained a rare open longitudinal split fracture of the lateral malleolus, resulting in lateral tarsocrural instability.
