Background: The melamine-tainted milk incident has caused renal disorders in more than 290,000 children from mainland China since the start of the outbreak in 2008. Since then, more than 27,000 children in Hong Kong have undergone renal US screening.
Objective: To present and discuss the US features of melamine-related renal abnormalities in Hong Kong children.
Materials And Methods: Between September 2008 and February 2009, 3,835 children attended the Department of Radiology of Princess Margaret Hospital for renal US examination. CT or plain abdominal radiography was performed in those with inconclusive findings. The US findings of detected melamine-related renal disorders were analysed.
Results: Echogenic foci in the kidneys were found in 22 children (0.6%). These were located in the renal pelvicalyceal system (in 12 children) and in the renal medulla (in 10 children). The echogenic foci measured 0.1-0.7 cm, with 6 children showing posterior acoustic shadowing, 14 showing comet-tail artefacts, and 2 showing echogenic dots.
Conclusion: The incidence of renal disorders amongst Hong Kong children exposed to melamine was lower than in their mainland China counterparts. The renal stones detected were also relatively small, with most demonstrating comet-tail artefacts instead of posterior acoustic shadowing.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the incidence, contributing factors, and clinical outcomes of acquired cystic kidney disease (ACKD) in children undergoing kidney replacement therapy (KRT).
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, territory-wide study at the designated pediatric nephrology center in Hong Kong. ACKD was defined as the presence of ≥ 3 cysts in the native kidneys, excluding congenital or hereditary cystic diseases.

Objective: Children with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) are at increased risk for vaccine-preventable diseases. The primary objective of the study was to estimate IgG antibody titers against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) in children with CKD and healthy controls who were previously immunized with measles/ MMR vaccine.
Methods: This case control study was conducted between January 2019 and January 2020.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain a significant global health burden, particularly in China, where kidney dysfunction (KD) is a key risk factor. This study analyzed trends in the burden of KD-induced CVD and subtypes among the working-age population (25-64 years) in China over the past 30 years and explored its association with age, period, and birth cohort.
Methods: This study extracted data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021, focusing on deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) caused by KD-induced CVD and subtypes, including ischemic heart disease (IHD), stroke, and lower extremity peripheral artery disease (LEPAD) among 25-64 years globally and in China from 1992 to 2021.

Background: The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is estimated to be about 13.4% worldwide. Studies have shown that CKD accounts for up to 2% of the health cost burden.

Objective: This study investigates the association between blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels and the risk of delirium in critically ill elderly patients without kidney disease.
Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted using data from the MIMIC-IV database. The relationship between BUN and delirium risk was illustrated through the restricted cubic spline (RCS) method.
