Coordination processes in complex systems can be related to the problem of collective ordering in networks, many of which have modular organization. Investigating the order-disorder transition for Ising spins on modular random networks, corresponding to consensus formation in society, we observe two distinct phases: (i) ordering within each module at a critical temperature followed by (ii) global ordering at a lower temperature. This indicates polarization of society into groups having contrary opinions can persist indefinitely even when mutual interactions between agents favor consensus.

Machine learning methods have been important in the study of phase transitions. Unsupervised methods are particularly attractive because they do not require prior knowledge of the existence of a phase transition. In this work we focus on the constant magnetization Ising model in two (2D) and three (3D) dimensions.

Spatial Optical Simulator for Classical Statistical Models.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

Hefei National Research Center for Physical Sciences at the Microscale and School of Physical Sciences, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei 230026, China.

Optical simulators for the Ising model have demonstrated great promise for solving challenging problems in physics and beyond. Here, we develop a spatial optical simulator for a variety of classical statistical systems, including the clock, XY, Potts, and Heisenberg models, utilizing a digital micromirror device composed of a large number of tiny mirrors. Spins, with desired amplitudes or phases of the statistical models, are precisely encoded by a patch of mirrors with a superpixel approach.

One of the key predictions of Parisi's broken replica symmetry theory of spin glasses is the existence of a phase transition in an applied field to a state with broken replica symmetry. This transition takes place at the de Almeida-Thouless (AT) line in the h-T plane. We have studied this line in the power-law diluted Heisenberg spin glass in which the probability that two spins separated by a distance r interact with each other falls as 1/r^{2σ}.

Contrasting thermodynamic and hydrodynamic entropy.

In this paper, using hydrodynamic entropy, we quantify multiscale disorder in Euler and hydrodynamic turbulence. These examples illustrate that the hydrodynamic entropy is not extensive because it is not proportional to the system size. Consequently, we cannot add hydrodynamic and thermodynamic entropies, which measure disorder at macroscopic and microscopic scales, respectively.

Nanothermodynamics: There's Plenty of Room on the Inside.

Nanothermodynamics provides the theoretical foundation for understanding stable distributions of statistically independent subsystems inside larger systems. In this review, it is emphasized that extending ideas from nanothermodynamics to simplistic models improves agreement with the measured properties of many materials. Examples include non-classical critical scaling near ferromagnetic transitions, thermal and dynamic behavior near liquid-glass transitions, and the 1/-like noise in metal films and qubits.
