Complexes of Sm(III), Eu(III), and Yb(III) with a new polydentate ether ligand with amide arms were synthesized. Solid state X-ray structures of the complexes reveal all three complexes crystallize in monoclinic unit cells. The mononuclear complexes have nine coordinate tricapped trigonal prismatic geometries with coordination of all four amide carbonyl oxygen and all three of the backbone ether oxygen atoms. The molecules possess a pseudo C(2) symmetry axis. The complexes were characterized by solution and solid state emission spectroscopy and IR spectroscopy. Solution state behavior of the complexes was further explored using NMR. The (1)H NMR spectra show 16 peaks suggesting the complexes are slow in exchanging on the NMR time scale and that the C(2) symmetry axis is maintained. The NMR spectra were assigned using (1)H, (13)C, COSY, and HMQC experiments. The Eu(III) complex was tested for the recently explored Magnetic Resonance Imaging phenomenon called paramagnetic chemical exchange saturation transfer (PARACEST). At physiological pH and temperature two CEST peaks were observed that caused a decrease in the bulk water molecule signal intensity of 10 and 16%.

Two artificial imidazole-derived nucleobases, HQIm (3H-imidazo[4,5-f]quinolin-5-ol) and CaIm (imidazole-4-carboxylate), were introduced into short DNA duplexes to systematically investigate their thermal stability upon metal ion coordination. Metal-mediated base pairs are formed with the 3d metal ions CoII, NiII and ZnII, as well as with the lanthanoid ions EuIII and SmIII, which induce a thermal stabilization of up to 8 °C upon binding. The latter are the first lanthanoid-mediated base pairs involving only four donor atoms that result in a significant duplex stabilization.

To examine the water-induced photoluminescence turn-on and its potential application in trace water sensing, a new series of [Ln(dmba)(HO)]·2HO, where Ln = La (), Pr (), Nd (), Sm (), Eu (), Gd (), Tb (), Dy (), Ho (), and Er (), were synthesized using dimethoxybenzoic acid (Hdmba). Their single-crystal structures and thermal and chemical robustness were investigated, and the effects of lanthanide contraction and noncovalent interactions were discussed. The photoluminescence and colorimetric properties of - were investigated.

New solid compounds of light lanthanide ions with 3-hydroxyflavone were synthesized in good yields (up to 85 %). The resulting complexes have been thoroughly characterized using various analytical and spectral techniques, including elemental analysis, complexometry, thermogravimetry, UV-VIS, FT-IR, H NMR, AgNPET LDI MS and fluorescence spectroscopy. The molecular formulas of the complexes were determined as follows: Ln(3HF), where 3HF-3-hydroxyflavone, Ln = La(III), Pr(III), Nd(III) and Ln(3HF)·nHO, where n = 1 for Ln = Ce(III), Sm(III), Eu(III), and n = 2 for Gd(III).

A new array of ternary lanthanide complexes of the form [Ln(hfa)(tpy-HImzphen)] have been synthesized and thoroughly characterized wherein Ln = La (), Eu (), Sm (), and Tb (); hfa = hexafluoroacetylacetonate; and tpy-HImzphen = 2-(4-[2,2':6',2″]terpyridin-4'-yl-phenyl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-]imidazole. Incorporation of tpy-HImzphen onto the Ln-hfa moiety induced a bathochromic shift of the absorption window of the complexes into the visible region. Extensive investigations of the luminescence characteristics have been conducted both at RT and at 77 K to understand the deactivation pathways of the complexes.

Lanthanide luminescence is characterised by "forbidden" 44 transitions and a complicated electronic structure. Our understanding of trivalent lanthanide(III) ion luminescence is centered on Eu because absorbing and emitting transitions in Eu occur from a single electronic energy level. In Sm both absorbing and emitting multiplets have a larger multiplicity.
