Near edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectra have been measured at the carbon and nitrogen K-edges of the prototypical aromatic molecule, pyrrole, both in the gas phase and when solvated in water, and compared with spectra simulated using a combination of classical molecular dynamics and first principles density functional theory in the excited state core hole approximation. The excellent agreement enabled detailed assignments. Pyrrole is highly reactive, particularly in water, and reaction products formed by the auto-oligomerization of pyrrole are identified. The solvated spectra have been measured at two different temperatures, indicating that the final states remain largely unaffected by both hydration and temperature. This is somewhat unexpected, since the nitrogen in pyrrole can donate a hydrogen bond to water.

A pyrrole-fused analogue of warped nanographene, designated as deca-nitrogen doped 'WNG' (azaWNG), was synthesized through the annular fusion of decapyrroylcorannulene. The resulting azaWNG exhibited extremely limited solubility in common organic solvents and was characterized solely by mass spectrometry. Theoretical calculations revealed that azaWNG has a sunflower-like molecular structure with electron-deficient corannulene as the core and electron-rich pyrrole as the petals, demonstrating a significantly narrower energy gap compared to all-carbon WNG.

Vasculature of the small bowel mucosa, with a significant role in nutrient absorption and gut homeostasis, has been suggested to undergo remodeling in various gastrointestinal disorders, including celiac disease. However, due to its spatial organization within the mucosa, conventional 2D histological methods are of limited value in studying the intestinal vasculature reliably. X-ray microtomography (micro-CT) is a promising tool for soft tissue imaging, as it enables digital 3D reconstruction of various tissue samples, including endoscopically obtained small-bowel mucosal biopsies.

Chemical speciation and availability of molybdenum in soils to wheat uptake.

J Environ Manage

January 2025

Department of Agricultural Chemistry, National Taiwan University, Taipei, 106319, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Molybdenum (Mo) is an essential micronutrient for plants, yet it also poses potential environmental risks when present in excess. This study investigated the Mo speciation in soils with varying properties and their influences on Mo uptake by wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), a staple crop with significant implications for global food security.

Nitrogen doped Carbon Quantum Dots (NCQDs) have been synthesized using most economical and easiest hydrothermal process. Here, N-phenyl orthophenylenediamine and citric acid were utilised as a source of nitrogen and carbon for the preparation of NCQDs. The synthesized NCQDs were characterized using experimental techniques like UV - Vis absorption, FT-IR, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), EDX, dynamic light scattering (DLS), fluorimeter and time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy.
