Greater than 30% mortality was observed unexpectedly in rat pups of weaning age kept with their dams in individually ventilated cages (IVC). A subsequent controlled study involving an induced electrical power failure that halted ventilation of IVC containing rat dams and pups showed that oxygen concentrations in the air in individual cages were rapidly depleted to less than 10% in 1 h. In a separate incident during which electrical power to IVC was inadvertently disconnected, rats died within 60 min of loss of power to IVC. The loss of electrical power to IVC housing rats is potentially a life-threatening condition requiring an immediate response and affirms the consideration of emergency (back-up) electrical power where these systems are used.

Optimizing demand response and load balancing in smart EV charging networks using AI integrated blockchain framework.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Theoretical Electrical Engineering and Diagnostics of Electrical Equipment, Institute of Electrodynamics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Beresteyskiy, 56, Kyiv-57, 03680, Kyiv, Ukraine.

The integration of Electric Vehicles (EVs) into power grids introduces several critical challenges, such as limited scalability, inefficiencies in real-time demand management, and significant data privacy and security vulnerabilities within centralized architectures. Furthermore, the increasing demand for decentralized systems necessitates robust solutions to handle the growing volume of EVs while ensuring grid stability and optimizing energy utilization. To address these challenges, this paper presents the Demand Response and Load Balancing using Artificial intelligence (DR-LB-AI) framework.

Unbalanced power systems cause transformers and generators to overheat, system losses to climb, and protective devices to trigger. An optimization-based control technique for distributed generators (DG) balances demand and improves power quality in three imbalanced distribution systems with 10, 13, and 37 nodes. Each system phase has its own DG.

All-polymer piezo-ionic-electric electronics.

Nat Commun

Key Laboratory of Advanced Technologies of Materials (Ministry of Education), School of Materials Science and Engineering, Southwest Jiaotong University, Chengdu, 610031, China.

Piezoelectric electronics possess great potential in flexible sensing and energy harvesting applications. However, they suffer from low electromechanical performance in all-organic piezoelectric systems due to the disordered and weakly-polarized interfaces. Here, we demonstrated an all-polymer piezo-ionic-electric electronics with PVDF/Nafion/PVDF (polyvinylidene difluoride) sandwich structure and regularized ion-electron interfaces.

Quantum computers now encounter the significant challenge of scalability, similar to the issue that classical computing faced previously. Recent results in high-fidelity spin qubits manufactured with a Si CMOS technology, along with demonstrations that cryogenic CMOS-based control/readout electronics can be integrated into the same chip or die, opens up an opportunity to break out the challenges of qubit size, I/O, and integrability. However, the power consumption of cryogenic CMOS-based control/readout electronics cannot support thousands or millions of qubits.

A novel air-to-liquid mass transfer system using wetted rotating membranes was designed to enhance air-to-liquid carbon dioxide (CO) mass transfer efficiency. Traditional methods, such as sparging, are energy-intensive, but the rotating membrane reduces energy demands by optimising membrane wetting via rotational motion. Experimental tests were conducted using a small-scale system with a membrane width of 0.
