Removal of endocrine disrupting chemicals from aqueous phase using spherical microporous carbon prepared from waste polymeric exchanger.

A spherical microporous carbon adsorbent (CR-1), which was developed by carbonization and activation of the waste polysulfonated cation-exchanger, was used to remove Dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and 2, 4-dichlorophenol (2, 4-DCP) as the model compounds of EDCs from the aqueous solution. Four adsorption isotherm models, Langmuir, Freundlich, Toth and Polanyi-Dubinin-Manes equations were tested to correlate the experimental data, Toth and Polanyi-Dubinin-Manes isotherms models provided the best correlation. The Henry's law constants calculated from Toth equation were found to be 705.957 and 6,724.713 L g(-1) for 2, 4-DCP and DMP at 298 K, respectively, and the larger exponents n of the Freundlich model were 9.011 and 9.93 for 2, 4-DCP and DMP at 298 K, respectively. The values of Henry's law constants and exponent n of the Freundlich suggested that CR-1 was an effective adsorbent for removal of low concentrations of DMP and 2, 4-DCP from aqueous solution. Moreover, the adsorption kinetics results showed that adsorption of 2, 4-DCP and DMP on CR-1 was a pseudo-second-order process controlled by intra-particle diffusion and that adsorption uptake reached quickly half of equilibrium capacities within 20 min.

Two extracellular peroxidases from Bjerkandera adusta strain CX-9, namely a lignin peroxidase (called LiP BA45) and manganese peroxidase (called MnP BA30), were purified simultaneously by applying successively, ammonium sulfate precipitation-dialysis, Mono-S Sepharose anion-exchange and Sephacryl S-200 gel filtration and biochemically characterized. The sequence of their NH-terminal amino acid residues showed high homology with those of fungi peroxidases. Matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/MS) analysis revealed that the purified enzymes MnP BA30 and LiP BA45 were a monomers with a molecular masses 30125.

A valuable peroxidase activity from the novel species growing on alkali lignin.

Degradation of lignin constitutes a key step in processing biomass to become useful monomers but it remains challenging. Compared to fungi, bacteria are much less characterized with respect to their lignin metabolism, although it is reported that many soil bacteria, especially actinomycetes, attack and solubilize lignin. In this work, we screened 43 filamentous actinomycetes by assaying their activity on chemically different substrates including a soluble and semi-degraded lignin derivative (known as alkali lignin or Kraft lignin), and we discovered a novel and valuable peroxidase activity produced by the recently classified actinomycete Compared to known fungal manganese and versatile peroxidases, the stability of peroxidase activity at alkaline pHs and its thermostability are significantly higher.

The effect of phenolic compounds: phenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), 2,4-dimethylphenol (2,4-DMP) and catechol on human erythrocytes was studied. The level of fluorescent label - 6-carboxy-2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (H(2)DCFDA) oxidation by phenolic compounds in erythrocytes as well as the carbonyl group content and hemoglobin denaturation were monitored. H(2)DCFDA has been utilized extensively as a marker for studies of oxidative stress at the cellular level.
