Metal-metal bearing surfaces in hip arthroplasty.

There is no mystery regarding the allure of metal-metal bearings: high stability and low wear potential. The special risks associated with these bearings are coming into focus and include a macrophage response to excessive metal particles (metal reactivity) and a lymphocyte-dominated reaction (metal sensitivity). The most common presentation of an adverse local tissue reaction (ALTR) is persistent pain. The incidence of ALTR has not been completely defined, but the risk appears to be increased in resurfacing, in women, and in bilateral cases. The differential diagnosis includes septic and aseptic loosening, and the evaluation should include aspiration. The diagnosis is confirmed by histological examination.

The field of platinum chemistry is ubiquitous in the research of anticancer drugs and new OLED materials. Within the vast library of existing compounds, the majority of work focuses on complexes in the +2 and +4 oxidation states, with comparatively few examples of Pt complexes reported without bridging ligands. Pt complexes with metal-metal bonding can be made by mild oxidation of Pt complexes having bis(phenylpyridine) ligands.

Elevating Nonlinear Optical Response Through D-Electron Modulation in Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Chemistry

January 2025

Institutes of Physical Science and Information Technology, Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, School of Life Sciences, Key Laboratory of Structure and Functional Regulation of Hybrid Materials, Ministry of Education, Anhui University, Hefei, 230601, P. Electronic structure and excited state behavior is of pronounced influence on regulation of nonlinear optical (NLO) response. Herein, a serials of transition metal ions bearing different d-electron numbers were in situ coordinated within porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), creating NLO-responsive M-metal (metal=Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) frameworks. It demonstrated that the NLO properties can be optimized with the increased occupancy of the d-shell, which enhances the degree of delocalization.

Article Synopsis
  • - The SOFCOT has been tracking hip prostheses data from nearly 100 centers in France since 2006, collecting a total of 58,314 surgeries primarily for osteoarthritis and femoral neck fractures, mostly in women around 71 years old.
  • - The research indicates that while the register's representativeness is low, it offers valuable insights into the performance and evolution of hip arthroplasty techniques and implants over the years.
  • - The analysis showed that early revision rates for hip prostheses were influenced by implant type and fixation method, with a revision index revealing low rates overall, indicating promising durability for certain implants like dual-mobility cups.

The catalyzed electrochemical oxidation of ammonia to nitrogen (AOR) is an important fuel-cell half-reaction that underpins a future nitrogen-based energy economy. Our laboratory has reported spontaneous chemical and electrochemical oxidation of ammonia to dinitrogen via reaction of ammonia with the metal-metal bonded diruthenium complex Ru(chp)OTf (chp = 2-chloro-6-hydroxypyridinate, TfO = trifluoromethanesulfonate). This complex facilitates electrocatalytic ammonia oxidation at mild applied potentials of -255 mV vs ferrocene, which is the [Ru(chp)(NH)] redox potential.

Pelvic Pseudotumor Associated With a Ceramic Bearing Total Hip.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg Glob Res Rev

March 2024

From the Department of Orthopedic Surgery Resident, University of Manitoba, Manitoba, Canada (Dr. Singh); Canadian Light Source, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada (Dr. Panahifar and Dr. Chernikov); Department of Surgery, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada (Dr. Dust).

Pseudotumors have been well documented to occur most frequently in metal-metal bearing total hip arthroplasties and less frequently in metal-polyethylene bearings. There are few cases in the literature of pseudotumors occurring in ceramic-ceramic articulations. We report a case of a large pelvic pseudotumor in a patient with a ceramic-ceramic bearing articulation in a 67-year-old man.
