We describe the synthesis and properties of oligonucleotides (ONs) containing biaryl units, which are composed of a bis(hydroxymethyl)benzene residue and a naphthalene or pyrene moiety. We found that by introducing the biaryl units into the ONs, the aromatic chromophores are suitably arrayed in the DNAs. Further, we succeeded in the detection of a single-base mismatch in RNA by using the ON containing the biaryl unit as a molecular beacon.

Enantioselective catalytic reactions have a significant impact on chemical synthesis, and they are important components in an experimental chemist's toolbox. However, development of asymmetric catalysts often relies on the chemical intuition and experience of a synthetic chemist, making the process both time-consuming and resource-intensive. The machine-learning-assisted reaction discovery can serve as a very efficient platform for obtaining high-performing catalysts in a time-economical manner without extensive experimentation.

Axially chiral biaryl δ-amino acids possess significantly different conformational properties and chiral environment from centrally chiral amino acids, therefore, have drawn considerable attention in the fields of synthetic and medicinal chemistry. Herein, a novel chiral phenanthroline-potassium catalyst has been developed by constructing a well-organized axially chiral ligand composed of one 1,10-phenanthroline unit and two axially chiral 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) units. In the presence of this catalyst, good to excellent yields and enantioselectivities (up to 99 % yield, 98 : 2 er) have been achieved in the ring-opening alcoholytic dynamic kinetic resolution of a variety of biaryl lactams, thereby providing an efficient protocol for catalytic asymmetric synthesis of unnatural axially chiral biaryl δ-amino acid derivatives.

Structure and Chiroptical Properties of Anthra[1,2-a]anthracene-1-yl Dimers as New Biaryls.

Dimers of anthra[1,2-a]anthracene-1-yl units and its mesityl derivative were synthesized by Ni(0)-mediated coupling of the corresponding chloro derivatives as new biaryls. The X-ray analysis and DFT calculations revealed that two polycyclic aromatic units with nonplanar deformations took a twisted conformation about the single bond as a chiral axis. Enantiomers of the nonsubstituted compound were resolved by chiral HPLC, and the enantiopure samples showed intense Cotton effects at 321 nm in the circular dichroism (CD) spectra and emission bands at 449 nm in the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectra with dissymmetry factor of |g| 3.

Visceral leishmaniasis and Chagas disease are neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) that severely impact the developing world. With current therapies suffering from poor efficacy and safety profiles as well as emerging resistance, new drug leads are direly needed. In this work, 26 alkaloids (9 natural and 17 synthetic) belonging to the benzyltetrahydroisoquinoline (BI) family were evaluated against both the pro/trypomastigote and amastigote forms of the parasites and , the causative agents of these diseases.
