Phylogenetic relationships within the paleotropical genus Lepisorus (Polypodiaceae) were investigated using plastid DNA sequences from four regions: rbcL, rps4 and rps4-trnS IGS, trnL intron plus trnL-F IGS, rbcL-atpB IGS. Over 4000 nucleotides were sequenced for 77 specimens belonging to 54 species. Each cpDNA region was analyzed separately and combined into a single dataset. All phylogenetic analyses, maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian Inference of phylogeny, revealed the paraphyly of Lepisorus with the monotypic Drymotaenium miyoshianum and of the paleotropical genus Belvisia nested within the Lepisorus clade. Nine well-supported major clades were found. The phylogenetic results provided new evidence for the sectional classification of Lepisorus. The evolution of three morphological characters, clathrateness of rhizome scales, margin of rhizome scales and defoliated leaves, and the evolution of the karyotype, were reconstructed to identify lineage specific phenotypic character states or combination of characters. Unique character combinations, rather than synapomorphies, were found to be of systematic value in sectional delimitation. The variation of chromosome numbers is largely due to a single aneuploidy event instead of a stepwise reduction during the evolutionary history of this genus.

A new species of the species-rich fern genus (Polypodiales, Polypodiaceae) has been found to occur in Shan state, Myanmar. is described based on morphological characters and phylogenetic evidence. Phylogenetic analyses showed that the specimens of formed a distinct clade nested in the clade.

The genus Lepisorus is often associated with complex lineages in Polypodiaceae, which leads to difficulty in understanding taxonomic relationships among the species. The taxa is mostly epiphytic with some distinct features like rhizomes covered with clathrate scales, simple fronds, sori in a single row, intermixed with peltate paraphyses. In this study, we precisely focus on the Lepisorus species and seek a broader understanding of the taxonomic relationships that prevail in this genus.

The establishment of a segregate lepisoroid fern genus Ellipinema was mainly to accommodate the isolated position of Lepisorus jakonensis (Polypodiaceae) recovered in plastid gene tree. Using newly obtained nuclear data, we recovered that Ellipinema and allied genera, such as Lepidomicrosorium, Lemmaphyllum, Neolepisorus, Paragramma, Tricholepidium and Weatherbya are deeply nested within Lepisorus. The nuclear phylogeny showing incongruent phylogenetic placement in comparison with plastid results perhaps indicated ancient hybridization events.

The fern genus Lepisorus represents one of the most complicated and controversial lineages in Polypodiaceae, with about 80 species which have been classified into several separate genera, and is notorious for its taxonomic difficulty. Despite progress in recent phylogenetic studies of the family Polypodiaceae involving Lepisorus and its allies, the deep phylogenetic relationship within this group of ferns is still unresolved, and no formal infrageneric classification has been proposed. This contribution presents the most comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of the genus, with 72% species sampled, using a total-evidence approach based on eight plastid markers and ≤25 morphological characters for each species.

Lepisoroid ferns (tribe Lepisoreae, Polypodiaceae) are arguably one of the most confusing fern groups in Polypodiaceae in terms of delimitation of genera largely because of their simple morphology. Previous molecular studies either had very small taxon sampling of the non-Lepisorus genera and did not well resolve the relationships among these genera, or had a relatively large sampling at species level but the critical species were missing or their relationships were not well resolved. A recent study resolved the newly sampled Lepisorus jakonensis as sister to the remaining genera in Lepisoreae excluding Paragramma, and the authors lumped all the six well recognized genera into Lepisorus.
