Turcz. is a winter annual species of the Asteraceae family, distributed in sandy areas of northern China, and is crucial for wind avoidance and sand fixation. To understand the inter- and intra-annual population dynamics of in its cold desert habitats, we conducted long- and short-term demographic studies to investigate the timing of germination, seedling survival, soil seed bank and seed longevity of natural populations on the fringe of the Tengger Desert.

Background: Cardiovascular deserts are areas that lack medical facilities, specialists and equipment to effectively diagnose, treat and manage cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Romania registers the highest incidence and the highest mortality due to CVDs in Europe. Population ageing is a significant concern, as it increases the risk of CVDs and the demand for specialised care.

Point-of-care ultrasound use in austere environments: A scoping review.

PLoS One

Department of Emergency Medicine, Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, NC, United States of America.

Background/objectives: Technological developments in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), particularly with portable devices, are transforming POCUS use in austere, resource-limited environments (RLS) distinct from typical hospital or medical settings. POCUS has potential to improve diagnostic accuracy in military combat zones, low-resource environments such as the desert or tropics, microgravity, and high altitudes. Our updated narrative scoping review describes POCUS use in these global settings.

Mining of Candidate Genes Associated with Leaf Shape Traits in Grapes.

Int J Mol Sci

November 2024

The State Key Laboratory of Genetic Improvement and Germplasm Innovation of Crop Resistance in Arid Desert Regions, Key Laboratory of Genome Research and Genetic Improvement of Xinjiang Characteristic Fruits and Vegetables, Institute of Horticultural Crops, Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Urumqi 830091, China.

As the most important organ for photosynthesis, leaves provide the main energy source for plant growth. Leaf traits affect light energy utilization and, thus, plant development and biomass. Given the high morphological variability of leaves between and within grape genotypes, phenotypic analysis is challenging.
