Group 9 metallocorroles 1-M(PPh(3)) and 1-M(py)(2) [M = Co(III), Rh(III), Ir(III); 1 denotes the trianion of 5,10,15-tris-pentafluorophenylcorrole] have been fully characterized by structural, spectroscopic, and electrochemical methods. Crystal structure analyses reveal that average metal-N(pyrrole) bond lengths of the bis-pyridine metal(III) complexes increase from Co (1.886 A) to Rh (1.957 A)/Ir (1.963 A); and the average metal-N(pyridine) bond lengths also increase from Co (1.995 A) to Rh (2.065 A)/Ir (2.059 A). Ligand affinities for 1-M(PPh(3)) axial coordination sites increase dramatically in the order 1-Co(PPh(3)) < 1-Rh(PPh(3)) < 1-Ir(PPh(3)). There is a surprising invariance in the M(+/0) reduction potentials within the five- and six-coordinate corrole series, and even between them; the average M(+/0) potential of 1-M(PPh(3)) is 0.78 V vs Ag/AgCl in CH(2)Cl(2) solution, whereas that of 1-M(py)(2) is 0.70 V under the same conditions. Electronic structures of one-electron-oxidized 1-M(py)(2) complexes have been assigned by analysis of electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopic measurements: oxidation is corrole-centered for 1-Co(py)(2) (g = 2.008) and 1-Rh(py)(2) (g = 2.003), and metal-centered for 1-Ir(tma)(2) (g(zz) = 2.489, g(yy) = 2.010, g(xx) = 1.884, g(av) = 2.128) and 1-Ir(py)(2) (g(zz) = 2.401, g(yy) = 2.000, g(xx) = 1.937, g(av) = 2.113).

In this study, we present two fully characterized nickel tetrathiocyanocorroles, representing a novel class of 3d-metallocorroles. These nickel(II) ions form square planar complexes, exhibiting a d-electronic configuration. These anionic complexes are stabilized by the electron-withdrawing SCN groups on the bipyrrole unit of the corrole.

The development of durable platinum-group-metal-free oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is a key research direction for enabling the wide use of fuel cells. Here, we use a combination of experimental measurements and density functional theory calculations to study the activity and durability of seven iron-based metallophthalocyanine (MPc) ORR catalysts that differ only in the identity of the substituent groups on the MPcs. While the MPcs show similar ORR activity, their durabilities as measured by the current decay half-life differ greatly.

A new family of β-dicyanovinyl (DCV)-appended corroles represented as MTPC(MN) (where M = 3H, Cu, Ag, and Co(PPh) and MN = malononitrile and TPC = 5,10,15-triphenylcorrole) were synthesized starting from the free base mono β-formyl corrole, HTPC(CHO), and characterized along with their respective MTPC(CHO) and MTPC complexes as to their spectroscopic and electrochemical properties in nonaqueous media. Comparisons between the two series of corroles demonstrate a pronounced substituent effect of the β-DCV group on the physicochemical properties making the MTPC(MN) derivatives substantially easier to reduce and more difficult to oxidize than the formyl or unsubstituted corroles. In addition, the colorimetric and spectral detection of 11 different anions (X) in the form of tetrabutylammonium salts (TBAX, X = PF, OAc, HPO, CN, HSO, NO, ClO, F, Cl, Br, and I) were also investigated in nonaqueous media.

A series of cobalt nitrophenylcorroles were spectrally characterized in CHCl, and under certain solution conditions, several compounds were shown to exhibit hypercorrole spectra resulting from charge transfer interactions from the corrole π-system to the redox-active -NOPh substituents. The resulting spectral pattern has not previously been reported for metallocorroles and in the case of the cobalt derivatives was shown to depend upon the number and position of the -nitrophenyl groups on the macrocycle, the position of the NO substituent on the -phenyl ring(s) ( or ), and the electronic structure of the corrole, which can exist in its innocent or noninnocent form depending in large part upon the type and number of axial ligands. Cobalt corroles bearing -nitrophenyl groups at the 5,15- or 5,10,15-positions of the macrocycle exhibited the most marked hypercorrole spectra under solution conditions where the complex was innocent (i.
