Vasoplegia in Heart, Lung, or Liver Transplantation: A Narrative Review.

J Cardiothorac Vasc Anesth

January 2025

Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA.

Vasoplegia is a pathophysiologic state of hypotension in the setting of normal or high cardiac output and low systemic vascular resistance despite euvolemia and high-dose vasoconstrictors. Vasoplegia in heart, lung, or liver transplantation is of particular interest because it is common (approximately 29%, 28%, and 11%, respectively), is associated with adverse outcomes, and because the agents used to treat vasoplegia can affect immunosuppressive and other drug metabolism. This narrative review discusses the pathophysiology, risk factors, and treatment of vasoplegia in patients undergoing heart, lung, and liver transplantation.

Objectives: This study aimed to develop a prediction model for the detection of early sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI), which is defined as AKI diagnosed within 48 hours of a sepsis diagnosis.

Design: A retrospective study design was employed. It is not linked to a clinical trial.

Swarm systems as a platform for open-ended evolutionary dynamics.

Philos Trans A Math Phys Eng Sci

January 2025

Binghamton Center of Complex Systems, Binghamton University, State University of New York, Binghamton, NY 13902, USA.

Artificial swarm systems have been extensively studied and used in computer science, robotics, engineering and other technological fields, primarily as a platform for implementing robust distributed systems to achieve pre-defined objectives. However, such swarm systems, especially heterogeneous ones, can also be utilized as an ideal platform for creating open-ended evolutionary dynamics that do not converge toward pre-defined goals but keep exploring diverse possibilities and generating novel outputs indefinitely. In this article, we review Swarm Chemistry and its variants as concrete sample cases to illustrate beneficial characteristics of heterogeneous swarm systems, including the cardinality leap of design spaces, multi-scale structures/behaviours and their diversity, and robust self-organization, self-repair and ecological interactions of emergent patterns, all of which serve as the driving forces for open-ended evolutionary processes.

Influences of rainfall characteristics on water saving and stormwater control performances of rainwater harvesting systems.

J Environ Manage

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Water Cycle & Related Land Surface Processes, Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, 100101, China; University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, 101407, China.

Rainwater harvesting systems (RHS) are extensively executed to manage stormwater control and water shortage issues in cities. However, the influences of rainfall characteristics on the performances of RHS are still not deeply explored. In this research, a methodology framework is developed to explore the influences of rainfall characteristics on stormwater control and water saving performances of RHS, by using daily precipitation data during 1968-2017 at 30 stations across the Beijing region as a testbed.

Music has long been recognized as a noninvasive and cost-effective means of reducing pain. However, the selection of music for pain relief often relies on intuition rather than on a scientific understanding of the impact of basic musical attributes on pain perception. This study examines how a fundamental element of music-tempo-affects its pain-relieving properties.
