The influence of microplastics on hypertension-associated cardiovascular injury via the modulation of gut microbiota.

Environ Pollut

January 2025

Heart Center and Beijing Key Laboratory of Hypertension, Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China; Department of Cardiology, Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Microplastics (MPs) have been found to interfere with the gut microbiota and compromise the integrity of the gut barrier. Excessive exposure to MPs markedly elevates the risk of cardiovascular disease, yet their influence on hypertension remains elusive, calling for investigation into their potential impacts on blood pressure (BP) regulation. In the present study, an increase in the concentration of MPs was observed in the fecal samples of individuals suffering from hypertension, as compared to the controls.

Cystitis glandularis (CG) is a chronic hyperplastic disorder of the bladder, and the available clinical drug therapy is insufficient currently. Glycyrrhetinic acid (GA), a bioactive compound extracted from the roots of Glycyrrhiza glabra, is found with beneficial actions, including anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects. We previously reported that GA relieves CG symptoms in animal model, implying the potential application of GA to treat CG.

This study aimed to design a novel liposome containing GA modified phosphatidylcholine lipid (GA-PC Lip) and determine its susceptibility to tumor over-expressed secretory phospholipase A (sPLA) and its anti-cancer effect compared to conventional liposomes (Convention Lip). The liposomes were characterized for size, drug loading, encapsulation efficiency, and stability. A 6-CF release assay was conducted to assess the sensitivity of the liposomes to the tumor-overexpressed secretory phospholipase A (sPLA).

Article Synopsis
  • Resveratrol (RSV) can aid healing after tooth extraction by reducing inflammation, but its effectiveness is limited by poor solubility.
  • Researchers developed a nanocomposite by combining RSV with lipid nanoparticles in a hydrophilic matrix to improve its delivery and enhance patient recovery.
  • The optimal PEG-based nanocomposites, when combined with hydroxyapatite, were found to work well as pharmaceutical powders for creating mini-tablets that can effectively release RSV into buccal tissue, promoting better healing in the surgical site.

The Role of Pentacyclic Triterpenoids in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: The Mechanisms of Action and Therapeutic Potential.

Lung cancer remains a major global health problem because of its high cancer-related mortality rate despite advances in therapeutic approaches. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), a major subtype of lung cancer, is more amenable to surgical intervention in its early stages. However, the prognosis for advanced NSCLC remains poor, owing to limited treatment options.
