We present the analytical and numerical analyses of two new resonator systems for generating flat-top-like beams. Both approaches lead to closed form expressions for the required cavity optics, but differ substantially in the design technique, with the first based on reverse propagation of a flattened Gaussian beam, and the second a metamorphosis of a Gaussian into a flat-top beam. We show that both have good convergence properties, and result in the desired stable mode.

Collimated flat-top beam shapers primarily consisting of freeform lenses have a wide range of applications and pose challenges in terms of processing and integration when the diameter is less than millimeters. Metasurfaces represent a promising solution to planarize optics, can mimic any surface curvature without additional fabrication difficulty, and are suitable for flat-top optics. The conventional metasurface design approach relies on imparting the required phase using meta-atoms and encounters challenges in amplitude modulation due to near-field coupling and varying transmittances among meta-atoms with different phases, making the design of flat-top beam shapers difficult.

Ow7ing to the flat center and steep edge, the flat-top beam is widely used in the fields of micromachining and optical image processing. Here, we propose an efficient scheme to generate a picosecond pulsed flat-top beam in a mode-locking all-fiber laser. After utilizing an orthogonal polarization method for complete incoherence and a high-precision all-fiber optical delay line (ODL) for rigorous time synchronization, the pulsed fundamental mode (LP) and the pulsed vortex beam (VB) are superimposed to generate a pulsed flat-top beam.

The near flat-top Gaussian beam, which finds significant applications in energy amplification, laser processing, nonlinear frequency transformation, and atmospheric turbulence studies, has received limited attention regarding its transverse mode field distribution characteristics during spatial transmission and amplification. In this study, we simulated the spatial transmission and amplification processes of the near flat-top Gaussian beam using the Collins diffraction equation and a traditional side-pumping gain model. To validate our simulations, we conducted experiments employing a gradual soft-edged aperture to produce a near flat-top Gaussian beam.

The spectral broadening of femtosecond vortex beams in air with different longitudinal pressure distributions is studied numerically. By introducing a symmetrical pressure distribution, a sufficiently broadened spectrum while preserving vortex characteristics of the beam for different input energies can be generated. The proposed pressure distribution involves an increase during the self-focusing stage, followed by a flat-top and symmetric decrease.

Laser cladding provides advanced surface treatment capabilities for enhancing the properties of components. However, its effectiveness is often challenged by the formation of hot cracks during the cladding process. This study focuses on the formation mechanism and inhibition of hot cracks in a novel cobalt-based alloy (K688) coating applied to 304LN stainless steel via laser cladding.
