Published: September 2009

The surface integrals of the modified theory of physical optics are divided into two parts for diffraction by a wedge. Each integral represents the incident or reflected field scattered by one of the faces of the wedge. The results are investigated numerically and compared with the uniform theory of diffraction.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the development of a linac-mounted photon-counting detector (PCD) for image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) that could significantly enhance imaging by improving soft-tissue contrast and spatial resolution compared to traditional flat panel detectors (FPDs).
  • Researchers characterized the image quality of the PCD, focusing on parameters like 2D spatial resolution, noise, and contrast, by comparing it with an FPD using various imaging techniques and calibration methods.
  • Results showed that the PCD provides a linear energy calibration and better raw contrast in images, suggesting its potential for improved tumor delineation in radiation therapy applications.

Precomputed low-frequency lighting in cinematic volume rendering.

PLoS One

October 2024

School of Computer Science and Engineeing, Northeastern University, Shenyang, Liaoning, P. R. China.

Cinematic Rendering (CR) employs physical models such as ray tracing and global illumination to simulate real-world light phenomena, producing high-quality images with rich details. In the medical field, CR can significantly aid doctors in accurate diagnosis and preoperative planning. However, doctors require efficient real-time rendering when using CR, which presents a challenge due to the substantial computing resources demanded by CR's ray tracing and global illumination models.

Improved Foucault method with double-shoot shadow grams in optical shop testing.

Rev Sci Instrum

September 2024

Joint Laboratory on High Power Laser and Physics, Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai 201800, China.

The lack of rapid, effective, and quantitative testing methods in the initial stages of optical processing has been identified as a significant challenge. In response, an innovative approach has been developed to enhance the Foucault knife-edge test method, integrating digital image processing and spatial geometry algorithms. This has resulted in the creation of a convenient and rapid optical testing method, which has been successfully implemented in practice.

We present the first real-time method for inserting a rigid virtual object into a neural radiance field (NeRF), which produces realistic lighting and shadowing effects, as well as allows interactive manipulation of the object. By exploiting the rich information about lighting and geometry in a NeRF, our method overcomes several challenges of object insertion in augmented reality. For lighting estimation, we produce accurate and robust incident lighting that combines the 3D spatially-varying lighting from NeRF and an environment lighting to account for sources not covered by the NeRF.

Shadowed versus Etched Superconductor-Semiconductor Junctions in Al/InAs Nanowires.

Nano Lett

July 2024

Center for Quantum Devices and Nano-science Center, Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, 2100 Copenhagen, Denmark.

Hybrid semiconductor-superconductor nanowires have emerged as a cornerstone in modern quantum devices. Integrating such nanowires into hybrid devices typically requires extensive postgrowth processing which may affect device performance unfavorably. Here, we present a technique for in situ shadowing superconductors on nanowires and compare the structural and electronic properties of Al junctions formed by shadowing versus etching.
