Article Synopsis
  • - An 88-year-old Japanese woman with HTLV-1 was found to have generalized lymphadenopathy and diagnosed with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) exhibiting characteristics similar to angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL).
  • - Biopsy results showed atypical T-cells with specific markers indicating a T-follicular helper phenotype, along with the presence of Epstein-Barr virus RNA and HTLV-1 proviral DNA, leading to the ATLL diagnosis.
  • - The case highlights the complexity of diagnosing ATLL as it can mimic other T-cell lymphomas, emphasizing the importance of routine HTLV-1 screening in areas where the virus is common to prevent misdiagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Accurate differentiation between donor-derived post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) and relapsed recipient-derived lymphoproliferative disorder (LPD) is essential for effective treatment post-hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).
  • Traditional diagnostic methods often fall short, especially in cases involving Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive LPDs with low tumor cell counts.
  • The newly developed method utilizes sex chromosome fluorescence in situ hybridization and other techniques on a single tissue section, successfully enabling accurate diagnosis of difficult cases and preserving histological structure.
