An extension of the fundamental wavelength phase-matching range for second-harmonic generation based on titanium-indiffused proton-exchanged lithium niobate guides has been demonstrated. Both the theoretical basis and experimental verification are presented.

Correlated photon-pair sources are key components for quantum computing, networking, synchronization, and sensing applications. Integrated photonics has enabled chip-scale sources using nonlinear processes, producing high-rate time-energy and polarization entanglement at telecom wavelengths with sub-100 microwatt pump power. Many quantum systems operate in the visible or near-infrared ranges, necessitating visible-telecom entangled-pair sources for connecting remote systems via entanglement swapping and teleportation.

Low-temperature phase (β-form) barium borate (BBO) is one of the most important nonlinear crystals that has been widely used for optical second-harmonic generation (SHG), especially with femtosecond sources. There was growing interest in its applications in the direct generation of terahertz (THz) radiations, but it was hindered by the lack of knowledge of its basic properties in the THz range. In a recent study based on first-principles quantum chemistry calculation, we found that the theoretically calculated refractive indices of β-BBO in the THz frequency range do not agree with the previously reported values.

Coherent broadband light generation has attracted massive attention due to its numerous applications ranging from metrology, sensing, and imaging to communication. In general, spectral broadening is realized via third-order and higher-order nonlinear optical processes (e.g.

Distributed feedback lasers, which feature rapid wavelength tunability, are not presently available in the yellow and orange spectral regions, impeding spectroscopic studies of short-lived species that absorb light in this range. To meet this need, a rapidly tunable laser system was constructed, characterized, and demonstrated for measurements of the NH radical at 597.4 nm.

We show that the phase mismatch in LiBO (LBO) crystals is approximately proportional to the temperature deviation from the phase-matching temperature of crystals. Moreover, a fixed temperature deviation would result in approximately the same amount of phase mismatch over a large range of wavelengths. Based on this, we demonstrate that the pulse characteristics of LBO-based femtosecond optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) can be tailored by simply tuning the crystal temperature.
