This study reports the interfacial properties and lyotropic liquid crystal formation of sodium 1,2-bis{6-[4-(4-cyanophenyl)phenyloxy]hexyloxycarbonyl}ethanesulfonate (SBCPHS), which is a double-tail surfactant with cyanobiphenyl terminal groups, in water. Polarized microscopic observation of water/SBCPHS mixtures revealed the presence of columnar and lamellar phases. In the lamellar phase, myelin figures representing multilamellar tubes were observed, and some of these figures had a double-helix structure. In order to examine these liquid crystal structures in detail, the bilayer thickness of the lamellar tubes and the lattice parameters of the columnar phase were measured by small-angle X-ray scattering analysis. Four scattering peaks that could be ascribed to C2/m symmetry were observed for the columnar phase. The bilayer thickness and one of the lattice parameters were smaller than twice the molecular length of SBCPHS; this showed that the liquid crystal phases had intercalated structures. Comparison of SBCPHS with a typical double-tail hydrocarbon surfactant revealed that the cyanobiphenyl terminal groups in the former helped increase the stability of the liquid crystal formed at low temperatures. The stabilizing effect of the cyanobiphenyl terminal groups on the liquid crystals could have been driven by electrostatic intermolecular interactions between the terminal groups in antiparallel arrangement of the SBCPHS molecules.

The interfacial proton transfer (PT) reaction on the metal oxide surface is an important step in many chemical processes including photoelectrocatalytic water splitting, dehydrogenation, and hydrogen storage. The investigation of the PT process, in terms of thermodynamics and kinetics, has received considerable attention, but the individual free energy barriers and solvent effects for different PT pathways on rutile oxide are still lacking. Here, by applying a combination of ab initio and deep potential molecular dynamics methods, we have studied interfacial PT mechanisms by selecting the rutile SnO(110)/HO interface as an example of an oxide with the characteristic of frequently interfacial PT processes.

Synthesis of functional polyethylene from ethylene alone is tricky and heavily dependent on both the type and structure of the precatalyst and the choice of cocatalyst used in the polymerization. In the present study, a series of cobalt precatalysts was prepared and investigated for ethylene polymerization under various conditions. By incorporation of strong electron-withdrawing groups (F and NO) and a steric component (benzhydryl) into the parent bis(imino)pyridine ligand, the catalytic performance of these precatalysts was optimized.

The aim of this study was to compare two different strains of Pekin duck and to answer one scientific hypothesis: 1) Strain and sex influence live body weight, hot and cold carcass weights and carcass portions weights and yields, fatty acid content, fatty acid total cholesterol and α-tocopherol contents of meat. The study used 50 individuals of each strain in comparison (Cherry Valley and Grimaud) equally divided between both sexes), raised in equal rearing and feeding conditions. The results show that, when raised in equal rearing and feeding conditions and slaughtered at matching age, the strain had no significant influence on live body weight at slaughter, warm and cold carcass weights.

Background: Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is an emerging modality with demonstrated efficacy in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), however, there is paucity of research in adolescent depression. This study attempts to evaluate the safety and efficacy of tDCS in adolescents with MDD as an early augmentation to drug therapy.
Methods: Adolescents with MDD aged 10-18 years were enrolled in the study and allocated to active or sham groups as per randomization.

Focusing on the Yashkun population of Gilgit-Baltistan, an administrative territory in northern Pakistan, our study investigated mtDNA haplotypes as indicators of ancient gene flow and genetic diversity. Genomic DNA was extracted and evaluated for quality using agarose gel electrophoresis. The complete control region of mtDNA (nt 16024-576) was amplified via PCR, and sequencing was performed using the Big Dye Terminator Kit on an Applied Biosystems Genetic Analyzer.
