Management of bleeding in the neonate, infant, or child presents its own set of dilemmas and challenges. One of the primary problems is the lack of good scientific evidence regarding the best management strategies for children rather than for adults. The key to success in the predicament is firstly to ensure that the physician has a clear understanding of the underlying normal physiology of the young child's hematologic status. Then by adding knowledge of the abnormal pathology that is being presented, the physician can at least understand what anomalies he or she is facing. Once all the available information concerning the patient's clinical condition and the options available has been well digested, a multidisciplinary approach allows the optimal use of all available resources. Good teamwork, understanding, and communication between all vested parties allows for a synergistic relationship to enhance patient care and give the best available end result.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is primarily associated with non-human-primates (NHPs) in Africa, which also infect humans. Since its introduction to Brazil in 2014, CHIKV has predominantly thrived in urban cycles, involving Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Limited knowledge exists regarding CHIKV occurrence and implications in rural and sylvatic cycles where neotropical NHPs are potential hosts, from which we highlight Leontopithecus chrysomelas (Kuhl, 1820), the golden-headed lion tamarin (GHLT), an endangered species endemic to the Atlantic Forest (AF) in Southern Bahia State, Brazil.

Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) is a blood borne pathogen that affects around 200 million individuals worldwide. Immunizations against the Hepatitis C Virus are intended to enhance T-cell responses and have been identified as a crucial component of successful antiviral therapy. Nevertheless, attempts to mediate clinically relevant anti-HCV activity in people have mainly failed, despite the vaccines present satisfactory progress.

Developing human papillomavirus (HPV) therapeutic DNA vaccines requires an effective delivery system, such as cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs). In the current study, the multiepitope DNA constructs harboring the immunogenic and conserved epitopes of the L1, L2, and E7 proteins of HPV16/18 (pcDNA-L1-L2-E7 and pEGFP-L1-L2-E7) were delivered using KALA and REV CPPs with different properties in vitro and in vivo. Herein, after confirmation of the REV/DNA and KALA/DNA complexes, their stability was investigated against DNase I and serum protease.

Introduction: Patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) with preoperative anemia are at higher risk for transfusion. Blood-conserving interventions can reduce perioperative transfusions. This retrospective study evaluates the efficacy and safety of a patient blood management (PBM) protocol in elective primary THA patients with preoperative anemia.

Coagulation factor XIa is a new serine-protease family drug target for next-generation anticoagulants. With the snake venom Kunitz-type peptide BF9 as the scaffold, we obtained a highly active XIa inhibitor BF9-N17K in our previous work, but it also inhibited the hemostatic target plasmin. Here, in order to enhance the selectivity of BF9-N17K toward XIa, four mutants, BF9-N17K-L19A, BF9-N17K-L19S, BF9-N17K-L19D, and BF9-N17K-L19K, were further designed using the P2' amino acid classification scanning strategy.
