We have designed and built a small animal single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging system equipped with parallel-hole and multipinhole collimators and capable of circular or helical SPECT. Copper-beryllium parallel-hole collimators suitable for imaging the ~35 keV photons from the decay of (125)I have been built and installed to achieve useful spatial resolution over a range of object-detector distances and to reduce imaging time on our dual-detector array. To address the resolution limitations in the parallel-hole SPECT and the sensitivity and limited field of view of single-pinhole SPECT, we have incorporated multipinhole circular and helical SPECT in addition to expanding the parallel-hole SPECT capabilities. The pinhole SPECT system is based on a 110 mm diameter circular detector equipped with a pixellated NaI(Tl) scintillator array (1x1x5 mm(3)/pixel). The helical trajectory is accomplished by two stepping motors controlling the rotation of the detector-support gantry and displacement of the animal bed along the axis of rotation of the gantry. Results obtained in SPECT studies of various phantoms show an enlarged field of view, very good resolution and improved sensitivity using multipinhole circular or helical SPECT. Collimators with one, three and five 1 mm diameter pinholes have been implemented and compared in these tests. Our objective is to develop a system on which one may readily select a suitable mode of either parallel-hole SPECT or pinhole circular or helical SPECT for a variety of small animal imaging applications.

Background: The application of semi-conductor detectors such as cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT) in nuclear medicine improves extrinsic energy resolution and count sensitivity due to the direct conversion of gamma photons into electric signals. A 3D-ring pixelated CZT system named StarGuide was recently developed and implemented by GE HealthCare for SPECT acquisition. The system consists of 12 detector columns with seven modules of 16 × 16 CZT pixelated crystals, each with an integrated parallel-hole tungsten collimator.

This study evaluated the potential to reduce the scan duration in dopamine transporter (DAT) SPECT when using a second-generation multiple-pinhole (MPH) collimator designed for brain SPECT with improved count sensitivity and improved spatial resolution compared with parallel-hole and fanbeam collimators. The retrospective study included 640 consecutive clinical DAT SPECT studies that had been acquired in list mode with a triple-head SPECT system with MPH collimators and a 30-min net scan duration after injection of 181 ± 10 MBq of [I]FP-CIT. Raw data corresponding to scan durations of 20, 15, 12, 8, 6, and 4 min were obtained by restricting the events to a proportionally reduced time interval of the list-mode data for each projection angle.

In our previous work on image reconstruction for single-layer collimatorless scintigraphy, we developed the min-min weighted robust least squares (WRLS) optimization algorithm to address the challenge of reconstructing images when both the system matrix and the projection data are uncertain. Whereas the WRLS algorithm has been successful in two-dimensional (2D) reconstruction, expanding it to three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction is difficult since the WRLS optimization problem is neither smooth nor strongly-convex. To overcome these difficulties and achieve robust image reconstruction in the presence of system uncertainties and projection noise, we propose a generalized iterative method based on the maximum likelihood expectation maximization (MLEM) algorithm, hereinafter referred to as the Masked-MLEM algorithm.

Collimators have a significant role in image quality and detectability in single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging. Using an appropriate alloy that effectively absorbs scattered photons, without induced secondary x-rays, and with proper rigidity and weight may provide an effective approach to the image improvement that conventionally collimators made of lead (Pb). Purpose: The current protocol for use of the image-guided adaptive brachytherapy (IGABT) procedure entails transport of a patient between the treatment room and the 3-D tomographic imaging room after implantation of the applicators in the body, which movement can cause position displacement of the applicator. Moreover, it is not possible to track 3-D radioactive source movement inside the body, even though there can be significant inter- and intra-fractional patient-setup changes. In this paper, therefore, we propose an online single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging technique with a combined C-arm fluoroscopy X-ray system and attachable parallel-hole collimator for internal radioactive source tracking of every source position in the applicator.
