The mrp homolog gene cluster mrpCD1D2EFGAB (Ap-mrp) was found in a halotolerant cyanobacterium, Aphanothece halophytica, amplified, and expressed in Escherichia coli mutant TO114. Ap-mrp complemented the salt-sensitive phenotype of TO114 and exhibited Na(+)/H(+) and Li(+)/H(+) exchange activities, indicating that Ap-Mrp functions as a Na(+)/H(+) antiporter.

Genome mining has revealed the halotolerant cyanobacterium Halothece sp. PCC7418 harbors considerable enrichment in the ion transport gene family for putative Na/H antiporters. Here, we compared transcriptomic profiles of these encoding genes under various abiotic stresses and discovered that Halothece NhaC (hnhaC) was one of 24 genes drastically upregulated under salt stress.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists found a special type of enzyme called iota-class GST in a type of bacteria that can survive extreme conditions.
  • They studied the genes and discovered that one enzyme (H0729) works really well to break down harmful chemicals better than others.
  • This research helps us understand how these bacteria protect themselves from stress, like too much salt, by using their enzymes effectively.

Several antiviral agents lost their efficacy due to their severe side effects and virus mutations. This study aimed to identify and optimize the conditions for exopolysaccharide (EPS) production from a newly isolated cyanobacterium, Acaryochloris Al-Azhar MNE ON864448.1, besides exploring its antiviral activity.

Novel CRISPR systems capable of cleaving both DNA and RNA are progressively emerging as attractive tools for genome manipulation of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. We report specific characteristics of CRISPR systems present in Oxynema aestuarii AP17, a halotolerant, filamentous cyanobacterium and the second known member of the Oxynema genus. In-silico analyses of its whole-genome sequence revealed the presence of multiple Type I and Type III CRISPR loci with one Type I-G system previously unreported in cyanobacteria.

Effect of salinity on the toxicity of diclofenac, ibuprofen and naproxen toward cyanobacterium Synechocystis salina.

Aquatic species are continuously exposed to pharmaceuticals and changeable water conditions simultaneously, which can induce changes in the toxicity of pollutants. Cyanobacterium are an organism for which less ecotoxicological tests have been performed compared to green algae. In this study, we decided to check how selected non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) affect the grow of Synechocystis salina, picocyanobacterium isolated from the Baltic Sea, with salinity as potential modulator of toxicity.
