Background: Nephroptosis (NP), defined as a renal drop in a patient in the vertical position of at least 5 cm or the height of 2 vertebral bodies, is usually an accidental finding on intravenous urography. Only 10% of patients with NP develop clinical symptoms. Surgical treatment is applied in patients with radiologically documented pathology that causes chronic complaints and worsens the quality of life. We present the results of treatment of NP by means of retroperitoneoscopic nephropexy (Npx) with 2-point renal fixation.

Method: Between 2003 and 2007, 21 females with a mean age of 39 years were treated for symptomatic NP by means of retroperitoneoscopic Npx. Each case of NP was confirmed by ultrasound and intravenous urography. The kidney was fixed using 2 interrupted stitches placed in the upper 1/3 part of the organ. All patients responded to the abbreviated version of the quality of life questionnaire-Short Form-36.

Results: Retroperitoneoscopic Npx was successfully performed in all patients. In all cases pain was relieved. Radiologic follow-up revealed subsidence of the symptoms of NP in all females. Each time the Short Form-36 questionnaire revealed improvement in all studied domains.

Conclusions: Retroperitoneoscopic Npx with 2-point renal fixation is a safe and effective method of treatment in symptomatic NP.

The therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of vancomycin (VCM) in critically ill patients often results in the estimated area being under the concentration-time curve (AUC) values that deviate from individual observations. In this study, we investigated the factors influencing the achievement of the target AUC of VCM at steady-state in critically ill patients. We retrospectively collected data from patients treated with VCM in an intensive care unit (ICU).

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of a high-intensity resistance training (HIT-RT) on visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and abdominal aortic calcifications (AAC).

Patients And Methods: We conducted a post hoc analysis of the Franconian Osteopenia and Sarcopenia Trial (FrOST). 43 community-dwelling men with osteosarcopenia aged 72 years and older were randomly allocated to a supervised high-intensity resistance training (HIT-RT) twice weekly for 18 months (EG; n=21) and a non-training control group (CG; n=22).

Context.—: Use of cystatin C for glomerular filtration rate estimation (eGFR) has garnered heightened interest as a means to avoid race-based medicine, since eGFRcys equations do not require specification of race. Before considering more widespread use of cystatin C, it is important to confirm that assays provide accurate measurements of cystatin C concentration, to ensure accurate GFR estimates.

A new nerve matrix membrane derived from decellularized porcine nerves has been shown to retain the major extracellular matrix components, and to be effective in preventing adhesion between the nerve anastomosis sites and the surrounding tissues in a rat sciatic nerve transection model, thereby enhancing regeneration of the nerve. The effectiveness of the membrane may be attributed to its various bioactive components. In this prospective, randomized, single-blind, parallel-controlled multicenter clinical trial, we compared the safety and efficacy of the new nerve matrix membrane with a previously approved bovine tendon-derived type I collagen nerve wrapping.

Objective: To describe the associations between right ventricular (RV) function and outcomes of patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) requiring continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT).

Methods: This is a retrospective study, conducted 2006-2015 at an academic hospital in USA. We included patients with AKI requiring CRRT who had paired echocardiograms within 2 weeks before and after CRRT initiation.
