Global concern regarding transformation products (TPs) derived from contaminants, including pesticides, in the environment and during water treatment has been growing markedly. In the present study, we investigated the anti-acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity of an aqueous solution of the organophosphorus insecticide disulfoton, a toxicological endpoint for determining the acceptable daily intake of disulfoton, both in the presence and the absence of metabolism during chlorination. Disulfoton rapidly reacted with free chlorine and completely disappeared within 0.

The dialysis membrane based on a hydrophilic polymer (Hydrolink NV) was designed to enhance the movement of adsorbed water at the blood-membrane interface, aiming to achieve antithrombogenic and antifouling effects. This study aimed to assess the performance and albumin loss of the Hydrolink NV dialyzer in hemodialysis (HD) and post-dilution hemodiafiltration (HDF) with different infusion flows (Qis) and compare it with the hydrophilic FX CorAL dialyzer in post-dilution HDF. A prospective study was carried out in 20 patients.

Sticholysin II (StII), a pore-forming toxin from the marine anemone Stichodactyla helianthus, enhances an antigen-specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) response when co-encapsulated in liposomes with a model antigen. This capacity does not depend exclusively on its pore-forming activity and is partially supported by its ability to activate Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) in dendritic cells, presumably by interacting with this receptor or by triggering signaling cascades upon binding to lipid membrane. In order to investigate whether the lipid binding capacity of StII is required for immunomodulation, we designed a mutant in which the aromatic amino acids from the interfacial binding site Trp110, Tyr111 and Trp114 were substituted by Ala.

Organic modification can generally endow inorganic materials with novel and promotional characteristics to fit into new functionalities. In this paper, new cement-based composite materials, with Portland cement as the substrate and polyacrylamide (PAM, alone) and PAM/chitosan as the functional components mixed with cement (bulk modified) or served as the surface coating (surface modified), were prepared and engineered as sampling substrates for biofilm and coral co-culture. In comparison to the bulk modified substrate and pure cement material, the surface modified substrate showed a balanced mechanical property, considering both bending and compressive strengths and distinctive surface features toward facilitating biofilm and coral growth, as characterized by spectroscopic, morphological, mechanical, and biofilm and coral co-culture experiments.

The ratio of Sr/Ca ions in marine biogenic minerals is considered advantageous for tracking geochemical and biomineralization processes that occur in the oceans. It is debatable, though, whether the ratio in biominerals such as coral skeleton is simply related to values in the seawater environment or controlled by the organism. Recent data show that coral larvae produce partially disordered immature aragonite in Mg-containing Sr-poor calcifying fluids, which transforms into well-ordered aragonite in Mg-depleted Sr-enriched environments, upon animal metamorphosis into the sessile polyp state.
