Significant effort has been made world-wide to boost biofuels with the expectation of a positive contribution to renewable fuel and greenhouse gas reduction. Jatropha curcas L. has proved to be an opportunistic crop in tropical areas, particularly in unfavorable environments. For this reason, analyses of toxicity and allergy caused by its seeds and pollen are necessary. A 12kDa, allergenic 2S albumin, denoted Jat c 1, was isolated from Physic nut (J. curcas) seeds. Jat c 1 binds IgE attached to rat mast cells, inducing histamine release. It also showed strong cross-reactivity with the major allergens from castor bean, Ric c 1 and Ric c 3.

Nine jatrophane diterpenoids, including six previously undescribed compounds, were extracted and purified from whole plants of Jatropha curcas L. Their structures including absolute configurations were characterized by spectroscopic, quantum chemical Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Electronic Circular Dichroism calculation, and Single Crystal X-Ray Diffraction methods. These compounds were evaluated for their ability to reverse multidrug resistance.

Article Synopsis
  • Wild pomegranate is a medicinal plant with significant health benefits, but its genome has not been fully understood until this study, which provides the first comprehensive genomic assembly.
  • The researchers assembled a genome of 279.0 Mb, predicting 49,178 genes with key functions related to metabolism and stress responses, and identified transcription factors and transposable elements.
  • The study also included a comparative analysis of the wild pomegranate genome against cultivated varieties and other plant species, helping to uncover evolutionary relationships and gene functions, especially in terpenoid biosynthesis.

Candida albicans, a common fungal organism, often lives harmlessly in the human body. However, under certain conditions, it can turn into a dangerous pathogen, causing infections that range from mild to life-threatening. With rising resistance to antifungal treatments, understanding and controlling this opportunistic fungus has never been more crucial.

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the radioprotective effects of Flavonoids Extracted from Jatropha curcas Leaves (FEL) and to elucidate the underlying protective mechanisms against radiation damage. Six monomers of the FEL were analyzed using Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC). The results indicate that FEL increases the survival rate of mice and promotes the recovery of organs damaged by Co γ-rays to their normal appearance, through mechanisms that include the enhancement of immune and hematopoietic functions in vivo.
