The incidence of skin cancer, including cutaneous melanoma, has risen substantially in recent years, and epidemiological and laboratory studies show that UV radiation is a major causative factor of this increase. UV damage also underlies photoaging of the skin, and these deleterious effects of UV can be, in part, prevented in skin with higher levels of constitutive pigmentation. We review the clinical studies we have made in recent years regarding the rapid and the long-term responses of the pigmentary system in human skin to UV exposure.Journal of Investigative Dermatology Symposium Proceedings (2009) 14, 32-35; doi:10.1038/jidsymp.2009.10.

dna2bit is an ultra-fast software specifically engineered for microbial genome analysis, particularly adept at calculating genome distances within metagenome and single amplified genome datasets. Distinguished from existing software such as Mash and Dashing, dna2bit employs feature hashing technique and Hamming distance to achieve enhanced speed and memory utilization, without sacrifice in the accuracy of average nucleotide identity calculations. dna2bit has promising applications in various domains such as average nucleotide identity approximation, metagenomic sequence clustering, and homology querying.

However, its role in these conditions remains poorly defined. Here we show that K16 negatively regulates type-I interferon (IFN) signaling and innate immune responses.

Here, we examine genetic associations with plasma and skin carotenoid concentrations in two rigorously phenotyped human cohorts (n=317). Analysis of genome-wide SNPs revealed heritability to vary by genetic ancestry (h²=0.
