Background: Autologous blood transfusion is one of the approaches used for prevention of the undesirable immunomodulatory effects of homologous blood transfusion that can cause an increase in cancer recurrence and surgical site infections. On the other hand, the benefits of autologous blood transfusion in that respect are not yet clearly identified. In this experimental study, we investigated the differences in effects of autologous and homologous blood transfusion on tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha levels and survival in an intraabdominal infection model in rats.

Methods: A total of 92 Sprague-Dawley rats were used in the study. Forty-four of those rats were divided into autologous and homologous transfusion groups, and intraabdominal infection was instituted by cecal ligation puncture method on the 7th day after blood transfusion. Blood samples were taken at the 90th minute and at 6-hour intervals after cecal ligation puncture and were used for measurement of TNF-alpha levels by ELISA method. In the remaining 48 rats, survival was investigated within the first week of cecal ligation puncture.

Results: Our results revealed significantly depressed TNF-alpha levels in the homologous blood transfusion group, but with respect to survival, no difference was detected between the groups.

Conclusion: Based on these findings, we concluded that autologous blood transfusion decreases transfusion-related immunomodulation but does not cause a decrease in mortality due to intraabdominal infection.

Objective: The short-term efficacy of red blood cell (RBC) transfusion among general traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients is unclear.

Methods: We used the MIMIC database to compare the efficacy of liberal (10 g/dL) versus conservative (7 g/dL) transfusion strategy in TBI patients. The outcomes were neurological progression (decrease of Glasgow coma scale (GCS) of at least 2 points) and death within 28 days of ICU admission.

Myelofibrosis (MF) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm that was most commonly treated with hydroxyurea (HU) prior to approval of ruxolitinib (RUX), now the standard of care. Factors that influence changes in MF treatment in real-world settings are not well understood. The METER study (NCT05444972) was a multi-country retrospective chart review of MF treatment patterns, treatment effectiveness, and healthcare resource utilization.

Arterial hypertension and increased atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) are strong predictors of cardiovascular risk associated in individuals with obesity both in adults and children. Thus, we aimed to explore the relationship between AIP and systolic ambulatory blood pressure index (sABPI) with left ventricular geometry pattern in obese children. In this cross-sectional study, a total of 129 obese children (BMI greater or equal to the 95th percentile for age and sex) were examined.

Introduction: Posterior vault distraction osteogenesis (PVDO) allows significant increase in intracranial volume but is associated with complications including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks, infection and device failure. The authors outline their outcomes over 12 years and the impact of PVDO on pre-existing Chiari malformation type 1 (CM).

Method: Retrospective review of all PVDOs in our unit over a period of 12 years from 2011 to 2023.

(SP) is a commensal and opportunistic pathogen of skin and mucosal surfaces, isolated from healthy dogs and from canine pyoderma cases. It has recently gained attention due to its increasing antibiotic resistance. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a biological product, obtained through a blood centrifugation process, which has antibacterial properties evidenced by in vitro and in vivo studies conducted in both the human and veterinary field.
