Published: April 2008

We study the spreading of an infection within an SIS epidemiological model on a network. Susceptible agents are given the opportunity of breaking their links with infected agents. Broken links are either permanently removed or reconnected with the rest of the population. Thus, the network coevolves with the population as the infection progresses. We show that a moderate reconnection frequency is enough to completely suppress the infection. A partial, rather weak isolation of infected agents suffices to eliminate the endemic state.

Importance: Uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common indication for outpatient antimicrobial therapy. National guidelines for the management of uncomplicated UTI were published in 2011, but the extent to which they align with current practices, patient diversity, and pathogen biology, all of which have evolved greatly in the time since their publication, is not fully known.

Objective: To reevaluate the effectiveness and adverse event profile for first-line antibiotics, fluoroquinolones, and oral β-lactams for treating uncomplicated UTI in contemporary clinical practice.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a distinctive epithelial cancer closely associated with Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) infection, posing significant challenges in diagnosis and treatment due to its resistance to conventional therapies and high recurrence rates. Current therapies, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy, exhibit limited efficacy, particularly in recurrent or metastatic cases, highlighting the urgent need for novel therapeutic strategies. Targeting EBV oncoproteins, such as Epstein-Barr Virus encoded Nuclear Antigen 1 (EBNA1), Latent Membrane Protein 1 (LMP1), and Latent Membrane Protein 2 (LMP2), presents a promising therapeutic avenue in NPC treatment.

Gastric ulcers (GUs) represent a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized by mucosal damage and inflammation, often precipitated by factors such as Helicobacter pylori infection and the consumption of COX inhibitors. This comprehensive review investigates the role of oxidative stress and inflammation in the pathogenesis of GUs and assesses the potential therapeutic effects of Punica granatum (pomegranate, Pg) supplementation. Utilizing a series of experimental models, including indomethacin, aspirin, and alcohol-induced ulcers, we demonstrate that Pg extracts possess significant gastroprotective properties.

Rational Design of Natural Xanthones Against Gram-negative Bacteria.

Most antibiotics are ineffective against Gram-negative bacteria owing to the existence of the outer membrane (OM) barrier. The rational design of compounds to expand their antibacterial spectra of antibiotics solely targeting Gram-positive pathogens remains challenging. Here, the design of skeletons from natural products to penetrate the OM are deciphered.

Introduction: Elvitegravir/cobicistat/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide (E/C/F/TAF) was efficacious and well tolerated in children/adolescents with HIV (aged ≥6 years, weighing ≥25 kg) in a Phase 2/3 study. Here, we report data from children aged ≥2 years and weighing ≥14-<25 kg.

Methods: This is an analysis of data from the youngest cohort in an open-label, multicentre, multi-cohort, single-group, international study of children/adolescents with HIV.
