The nomenclature of each part of the lacrimal canaliculus, for example the vertical portion, does not always reflect the true course. Since we have sometimes observed findings suggesting the so called vertical portion of the lower lacrimal canaliculus inclined laterally, we re-examined the course of the vertical portion. Twenty-eight postmortem lower eyelids in 16 Japanese were examined and divided into 2 groups. The first group was 14 lower eyelids of 7 cadavers. Eyelids were incised sagittally from the lower lacrimal punctum. The second group was 14 lower eyelids of 9 cadavers; these were incised from the lower lacrimal punctum with 5 degrees lateral inclination to the sagittal plane. In the first group, 10 canaliculi of 7 cadavers were interrupted at the halfway point of the vertical portion. Four canaliculi of 4 cadavers included the whole length of the vertical portion. In the second group, all specimens included the whole length of the vertical portion. Most vertical portions of the lower lacrimal canaliculus demonstrated a laterally inclined course of approximately 5 degrees, although some took a completely vertical course.

Deep monitoring wells with long screens crossing the transition zone between freshwater and saltwater are often used in coastal areas to characterize fresh groundwater resources and the depth of saline groundwater. However, past studies have demonstrated that long-screen wells can lead to biased observations of the transition zone, since vertical flow within the borehole can modify the shape and elevation of the transition zone in and around the borehole compared to undisturbed conditions without a well. Here, field observations and variable-density numerical flow simulations are used to evaluate, under natural flow conditions, how the installation of long-screen wells can provide time-varying biased observations of the freshwater-saltwater transition zone, and how various aquifer and well parameters affect the magnitude of these biases.

Butterfly pupal wing tissue with an eyespot organizer.

Cells Dev

Tunicate Laboratory, Department of Chemistry, Biology and Marine Science, Faculty of Science, University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa, Japan.

Butterfly wing eyespots are developmentally determined at the early pupal stage, when prospective eyespot focal cells underneath the pupal cuticle focal spot function as eyespot organizers in the pupal wing tissue. Here, we performed light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to describe cellular structures of pupal wing tissue with an eyespot organizer immediately after pupation using the Blue Pansy butterfly Junonia orithya. The pupal forewing dorsal epidermis was a pseudostratified monolayer of vertically elongated epidermal cells.

Informing Near-Airport Satellite NO Retrievals Using Pandora Sky-Scanning Observations.

ACS EST Air

December 2024

School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia 30332, United States.

Airports are a large and growing source of NO . Tracking airport-related emissions is especially difficult, as a portion of emissions are elevated above the surface. While satellite-based NO observations show hot-spots near airports, near-source retrievals often have large biases related to uncertainties in the NO vertical distribution and resultant air mass factors (AMF).

Background: Obesity is a multifactorial disease affecting a significant portion of the population. Bariatric surgery emerges as a prominent approach in this context, representing an effective treatment both in the short and long term. The costs associated with bariatric surgery vary depending on the characteristics of the patients, current hospital practices, and available funding sources.

A Metasurface Glass for Energy Saving and 5G Mobile Communication Signal Enhancement.

Windows constitute a significant portion of the facade in buildings and modern ground transportation vehicles, such as commercial skyscrapers, high-speed trains, and subway systems. Traditional glass windows lack adequate thermal insulation and heat retention capabilities; Low-Emissivity (Low-E) glass can block external infrared radiation, it also impedes mobile communication signals, particularly those in the 5G Sub6G frequency band. This paper introduces an innovative metasurface glass designed to enhance 5G mobile communication signals within the interior of glass windows.
