The clinical findings of scurvy have been known for well over 3,000 years. In 1753, Sir James Lynd demonstrated the efficiency of citrus fruit in the prevention of this condition. Scurvy still occurs from time to time in this country, notably in the elderly, particularly in bachelors who live alone and eat a poor diet. Scurvy has been associated with gastrointestinal malignancy, but, as far as we know, it has not been reported in association with carcinoma of the caecum. We report the case of an elderly female patient who presented with features of scurvy and was also found to have carcinoma of the caecum.

BACKGROUND The thyroglossal duct cyst, which develops from the midline migratory tract between the foramen cecum and the anatomic location of the thyroid, is the most prevalent congenital abnormality of the neck, accounting for about 70% of all cervical neck masses in children and 7% in adults. Only up to 1% of these abnormalities contain malignant thyroid tissue, with 90% of those cases being papillary thyroid carcinoma. Thyroglossal duct cyst is rarely linked to carcinoma.

While tobacco smoking is a risk factor in the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), only a fraction of smokers develop the disease. Compelling evidence shows that microbial community composition is associated with carcinogenesis, suggesting that the microbiome may play a role in cancer development of smokers. We previously showed that black raspberry (BRB) protects against OSCC induced by the tobacco constituent dibenzo[def,p]chrysene (DBP) via alteration of genetic and epigenetic markers in a manner consistent with its cancer preventive activity.
