Published: July 2009

A scanning Kerr microscope with a temporal resolution of <230 fs and a spatial resolution of 210 nm is presented. Equipped with a large temporal and spatial scanning range of 8 ns and 320 microm, respectively, the microscope allows studying nonuniform magnetization dynamics on many different time scales over a large area. For demonstration, we study the magnetization dynamics in Fe/Gd multilayer dot arrays exhibiting a spin reorientation transition (SRT) on three different time scales, namely, femtosecond, picosecond, and nanosecond scales. The dynamics on all time scales varies from one dot to another. This is attributed to the high sensitivity of the SRT to the variations of the layer thicknesses and the Fe/Gd interface structure.

Droplet-based microfluidics is a powerful tool for high-throughput analysis of liquid samples with significant applications in biomedicine and biochemistry. Nevertheless, extracting content-rich information from single picolitre-sized droplets at high throughputs remains challenging due to the weak signals associated with these small volumes. Overcoming this limitation would be transformative for fields that rely on high-throughput screening, enabling broader multiparametric analysis.

Coastal vertical land motion (VLM), including uplift and subsidence, can greatly alter relative sea level projections and flood mitigations plans. Yet, current projection frameworks, such as the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, often underestimate VLM by relying on regional linear estimates. Using high-resolution (90-meter) satellite data from 2015 to 2023, we provide local VLM estimates for California and assess their contribution to sea level rise both now and in future.

Understanding and modeling of gas puff injection for diagnostic purposes.

Rev Sci Instrum

January 2025

Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik, Garching 85748, Germany.

This article presents an experimental setup capable of providing high spatial and temporal resolution measurements of neutral gas puff injection using a glow discharge to excite the neutral gas and an ultra-high-speed camera to record the emitted light. Using the proposed setup, the shape and propagation velocity of a thermal deuterium gas puff at 1 bar have been measured. The cloud has a conical shape and a propagation velocity of vprop = 1870 ± 270 m/s.

Pattern separation and pattern completion in the hippocampus play a critical role in episodic learning and memory. However, there is limited empirical evidence supporting the role of the hippocampal circuit in these processes during complex continuous experiences. In this study, we analyzed high-resolution fMRI data from the "Forrest Gump" open-access dataset (16 participants) using a sliding-window temporal autocorrelation approach to investigate whether the canonical hippocampal circuit (DG-CA3-CA1-SUB) shows evidence consistent with the occurrence of pattern separation or pattern completion during a naturalistic audio movie task.

Purpose: To report a case of bilateral choroidal osteoma successfully treated with subscleral sclerectomy for secondary serous retinal detachment (SRD).

Observations: A 52-year-old Japanese woman first diagnosed with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease and treated with steroids for 9 years was referred to our clinic. SRD in both eyes recurred frequently and was uncontrolled with adalimumab subcutaneous injections and oral cyclosporine, in addition to steroids.
