Birch reductive alkylation of biaryls has been carried out by varying the nature of the substituents on the aromatic rings. Our investigations have focused on electron-rich substituents such as OMe, OH, and NR(2) groups as they are present on the skeleton of targeted alkaloids. The regioselectivity is strongly affected by the electronic nature of these substituents on both rings. The 3,5-dimethoxyphenyl moiety is selectively reduced and then alkylated, while phenols and anilines do not react under these conditions. A biaryl possessing both a 3,5-dimethoxyphenyl moiety and a phenol ring may, however, be reduced and alkylated provided the acidic phenolic proton is removed prior to the treatment with Li in NH(3). Similarly, biaryls possessing a o-sulfonamide group are reduced regioselectively and alkylated with alpha-chloroacetonitrile or N-tosylaziridine to provide the corresponding dienes in reasonable to good yields. A survey of the alkylating agents was also performed showing that various functional groups may be introduced at the benzylic position, including esters, primary and tertiary amides, nitriles, epoxides, and acetals and also unfunctionalized sterically hindered t-Bu groups and cyclopropyl substituents. The introduction of the latter indicates that both a S(N)2 and a SET mechanism may take place during the alkylating step.

The Zincke reaction and Birch reduction have been one of the few reactions that allow for ring opening of pyridines ever since the discovery of pyridine more than a century ago. This paper presents a new addition to the list of pyridine ring-opening reactions, reductive Zincke reaction, which affords saturated δ-amino ketones. Under the catalysis of a simple rhodium complex, pyridinium salts with diverse substituents are reduced with formic acid, ring-opened with water, transaminated with a secondary amine and further reduced to afford a wide range of δ-amino ketones, including those in which the alkane chain of the ketones is selectively deuterated or fluorinated.

This study investigates the effects of suberic acid residue (SAR) additions on structural single-layer particleboard (like the P5 type, according to EN 312) properties, specifically the water absorption (WA), thickness swelling (TS), modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), screw withdrawal resistance (SWR), and internal bond (IB) strength. The results indicate that finer SAR fractions (1/0.25 and 2/1) reduce the WA after 2 h of soaking, while larger fractions increase the WA after 24 h, with only the smallest fraction meeting the TS standards.

Intermittently closed and open coastal lakes and lagoons (ICOLLs) are ecologically important and hydrologically sensitive estuarine systems. We explore how extreme drought and ICOLL entrance management intersect to influence the geochemical cycling of iron. Opening the ICOLL entrance just prior to an extreme drought in 2019 led to prolonged extremely low water levels, thereby exposing intertidal/subtidal sulfidic sediments and causing oxidation of sedimentary pyrite.
