Healthy active living: A goal or a mirage? A survey of Canadian paediatricians.

Paediatr Child Health

Canadian Paediatric Society, Healthy Active Living Committee.

Published: March 2004

AI Article Synopsis

  • * The Canadian Paediatric Society's Healthy Active Living Committee surveyed 1866 pediatricians to evaluate their knowledge and engagement with healthy active living (HAL) initiatives.
  • * The survey had a low response rate of 16% and its results aim to inform pediatricians about HAL resources, highlight a lack of interest in addressing childhood obesity, and update members on committee activities.

Article Abstract

Childhood obesity is a major health concern. Inactivity is a major cause of this epidemic. The Healthy Active Living Committee of the Canadian Paediatric Society sampled 1866 paediatricians across Canada to assess members' knowledge of healthy active living (HAL), how they currently use HAL materials, what new materials would be most useful, and who would be most likely to carry the messages forward. The survey had only a 16% response rate. The results are published to help educate members, demonstrate the apparent lack of interest in a decidedly important area (and give reasons for this apathy), provide members with information on HAL materials, and update members on HAL committee actions since the survey was sent.

Endometriosis and adenomyosis are debilitating gynecological conditions that severely affect the quality of life of women. Traditional diagnostic and treatment methods, including laparoscopic surgery and hormonal therapy, face significant limitations such as incomplete lesion detection, high recurrence rates, and adverse side effects. Emerging bioengineering technologies offer promising solutions for precise diagnosis and therapy of these diseases.

Background: The low-pressure, hypoxic environment characteristic of high-altitude regions significantly affects the cardiovascular and autonomic nervous system functions of individuals, consequently impairing their sleep quality. Heart rate variability, a non-invasive indicator of autonomic nervous system activity and balance within the cardiovascular system, has not been thoroughly investigated in terms of its patterns during acclimatization and de-acclimatization phases for individuals traveling to and residing in high-altitude areas and its relationship with sleep stability.

Methods: Data was collected from 22 medical staff members who traveled from Chengdu to Yecheng, with measurements taken before leaving Chengdu, 1 week in Yecheng, 3 months in Yecheng, and 1 week after returning to Chengdu.

Central mechanisms of muscle tone regulation: implications for pain and performance.

Front Neurosci

December 2024

Department of Psychology and Communication, University of Idaho, Moscow, ID, United States.

Muscle tone represents a foundational property of the motor system with the potential to impact musculoskeletal pain and motor performance. Muscle tone is involuntary, dynamically adaptive, interconnected across the body, sensitive to postural demands, and distinct from voluntary control. Research has historically focused on pathological tone, peripheral regulation, and contributions from passive tissues, without consideration of the neural regulation of active tone and its consequences, particularly for neurologically healthy individuals.

Background: OSA can cause cognitive impairment (CI). The aim of this study was to investigate whether miR-20a-5p in exosomes derived from bEnd3 cells with IH mediates intercellular crosstalk and induces CI through hippocampal neuronal cell pyroptosis.

Materials And Methods: BEnd3-derived exosomes were isolated from the normal oxygen control group (NC-EXOS) and IH group (IH-EXOS).

Low-grade inflammation and pathological endochondral ossification are key processes underlying the progression of osteoarthritis, the most prevalent joint disease worldwide. In this study, we employed a multi-faceted approach, integrating publicly available datasets, analyses, experiments and models to identify new therapeutic candidates targeting these processes. Data mining of transcriptomic datasets identified EPHA2, a receptor tyrosine kinase associated with cancer, as being linked to both inflammation and endochondral ossification in osteoarthritis.
