A general model for different apertures and flat-topped laser beams based on the multi-Gaussian function is developed. The general analytical expression for the propagation of a flat-topped beam through a general double-lens system with apertures is derived using the above model. Then, the propagation characteristics of the flat-topped beam through a spatial filter are investigated by using a simplified analytical expression. Based on the Fluence beam contrast and the Fill factor, the influences of a pinhole size on the propagation of the flat-topped multi-Gaussian beam (FMGB) through the spatial filter are illustrated. An analytical expression for the propagation of the FMGB through the spatial filter with a misaligned pinhole is presented, and the influences of the pinhole offset are evaluated.

This study investigates the bidirectional transmission of a partially coherent flat-topped beam in a turbulent atmosphere and plasma. Analytical formulas for the intensity distribution and M factor are derived based on the optical transmission matrix, Collins formula, and second moment theory with Wigner distribution function. Numerical results show that the beam order and transverse spatial coherence width can be selected appropriately to mitigate turbulence and plasma induced evolution properties.

Based on the coherence theory for non-stationary optical fields, we introduce a new class of partially coherent pulse sources with multi-cosine-Gaussian correlated Schell-model (MCGCSM) and derive the analytic expression for the temporally mutual coherence function (TMCF) of an MCGCSM pulse beam when it propagates through dispersive media. The temporally average intensity (TAI) and the temporal degree of coherence (TDOC) of the MCGCSM pulse beams spreading in dispersive media are investigated numerically, respectively. Our results show that over propagation distance, the evolution of pulse beams is from the primary single beam into multiple subpulses or form flat-topped TAI distributions by controlling source parameters.

The fiber-coupling efficiency of signal beams is crucial in free space optical (FSO) communications. Herein, we derived an analytical expression for the fiber-coupling efficiency of partially coherent flat-topped beams propagating through atmospheric turbulence based on the cross-spectral density function. Our numerical calculation results showed that the fiber-coupling efficiency of partially coherent flat-topped beams in a turbulent atmosphere could be enhanced by increasing the beam order.

Theoretically, we have investigated the propagation of fully and partially coherent flat-topped multi-Gaussian beams through classical and logarithmic axicons. The stationary phase method applied to the Fresnel diffraction integral for intensity distribution has led to applicable relationships. The influences of axicon base angle, beam width, beam flatness, and coherence length with intensity distribution were studied.

We introduce a new kind of partially coherent source whose cross-spectral density (CSD) function is described as the incoherent superposition of elliptical twisted Gaussian Schell-model sources with different beam widths and transverse coherence widths, named twisted elliptical multi-Gaussian Schell-model (TEMGSM) beams. Analytical expression for the CSD function propagating through a paraxial ABCD optical system is derived with the help of the generalized Collins formula. Our results show that the TEMGSM beam is capable of generating a flat-topped elliptical beam profile in the far field, and the beam spot during propagation exhibits clockwise/anti-clockwise rotation with respect to its propagation axis.
